Building A ELR Rifle

My Nephrologist, (kidney doctor) told me that any time I wanted to come up to his ranch, I could shoot out to just past 1 mile. He dabbles in it somewhat.

I have a Bat M Action, which is currently bedded into a Shehane Tracker Stock. It has a Bix &Andy Trigger.

I am wanting to go with the 338 Remington Ultra Mag, shooting either 275 or 300 grain bullets. I am not sure if Bat recommends taking a Bat M bolt out to the 338 Lapua diameter, which is the reasoning behind the RUM. The scope will probably be the big Valdada Eliminator, or an equivalent.

The Bat M will support a lot of barrel. Of course, the most affective muzzle brake possible would be on the muzzle end.

I would like to end up with a chassis rather than the Tracker.

Any thoughts? I know my way around Short Range Group and Score pretty well, this is simply an itch I want to scratch.

I love the ELR game! I'm still scratching that itch! I'm fortunate to have access to my buddies ranch next to me.
My thoughts are of no value to anyone but myself and the unfortunates I shoot with.
I'm not a fan of a chassis, especially in bigger calibers. Those things "ring" like a tuning fork.
I have tested quite a few different 338 cal bullets. The Berger 300 grain OTM does a good job transitioning. You'll be happy with that. Mine is a 338Imp so not really the same. In 30 Cal don't overlook the the 300PRC. and a 215 Berger. Very capable out to a mile. The hit percentage is greater with the bigger calibers. I have run the 5 port Fat Bastard Brake. Very effective and very loud. Have fun.

Just to scratch the itch I would get a factory savage long range 338LM and see if you're going to enjoy it before to much investment. Great factory ammo offerings and minimal up front cost to determine if you'd stick with it. Then if you like it built a purpose built ELR gun.

Since I build my own Rifles, I cannot go the Savage route.

Half the fun is building the Rifle.

Understand. I agree too. Same with reloading. I'd suggest maybe trying your hand at it with a good friend who's willing to let you use their stuff first then.

I have several rigs i would call ELR capable and haven't touched them for years due to cost, places to enjoy, and lack of others to enjoy the sport with.

Just trying to save you some money.

If it’s just out to say 2k I’d also consider a 7mm magnum of some flavor
It’s surprisingly how well the 190LRHT does, even well past 2k.

My first 2 mile impacts were with my 7SAUM
Hard part at that range is spotting impacts.

375 rum gets to 2750-2800 with a 350smk
Not flat shooting as a 300 rum or 7mm but spotting is good as is wind.

300rum with a 230 and 245 is formidable and ADG brass is solid and available.
I’d add in some extra freebore to get more case capacity and better bullet position.
Like the 300 & 338 Norma freebore.

Probably want to stay with lead core as even the 338 solids create less splash than a 230 Berger
Solids really are more practical in 375 and bigger to offset the splash difference.

In my 338 edge with a 30” barrel I can easily get 2900 with N570 and a 300 Berger, I’m guessing 338 rum is 100 fps or so below that as there’s a decent case capacity difference for the 300rum/338 edge case over 338RUM.
8-10 grains I think.

I’m guessing 338 Lapua improved is 2980-3000 with a 300 easy
I know George at badlands was 120 fps faster than my edge with his 285(in 338LMI I’m at 3000k with the 285 solid) and I wouldn’t shoot that load in high heat.

I recently started playing with one for the same purpose. I got a reamer and dies from Dave Tooley for the 338/375 Ruger. Just a 300 prc necked up to 338. So far it pushes a 250gr bullet at 2900 from a 26" barrel. I expect to get 2700 from a 300gr bullet. Way less recoil and muzzle blast( and expense) than the big lapua. Only running 77.5gr of H4350 behind a 250. Just food for thought

What’s the ideal twist for the 275/300 grain 338 bullets.
I figure to order a Bartlien Barrel in their 400 Mod steel. I don’t know yet what the most popular throat length for the big bullets is. Heck, I’m not even sure what barrel profile to order.

Is your action a 1.25 shank or is it bigger?
Heavy varmint is nice on a 1.25, there’s a cheytac profile for 1.35 that’s similar to HV.
Here’s my CT profile on the left.

I bought a Savage 338LM single shot. The 300gr Berger protrude into the case body about .250". That is due to the repeater model length. I had my gunsmith friend throat it .240", puts the base of the bullet just at the neck shoulder junction. Same load, cut the groups size from 1.25" for three shots to .75-.80" at 100 and it's now at 1.5" for three shots at 300 yards. I have a Surgical Consult on February 4th on my back, so the burly nephew did the testing.

I run a MTU contour currently on 338 but the blank I have to replace it is a heavy varmint.
My rifle is 25 pounds and recoil is quite mild.

With that tenon diameter a 1.35 cheytac profile is doable.
I don’t see the Cheytac profile listed on Bartliens Site. Does it start at 1.350 and taper down at the same rate as their HV.?

Bartlein contour #9 is the HV. Mine starts at 1.350 and I assume tapers down in the same graduation as the 1.250......But honestly, I never checked it. My blanks are 33" to finish at 32"

The guys at Bartlein answer the phone and are very knowledgeable about their products...262-677-1717

They will also stamp the major diameter to 4 decimal places if you ask.

It’s rather timely that this thread is running at this time. If I use the Shehane Tracker Stock, I am going to have to figure a way to mount a suitable Bypod.
