building a 6mm 284

I'm looking to re barrel one of my rifles into a 6 mm 284. A number of years ago I had one and still have all the dies (forming, full, neck and seater). I don't remember what the twist rate on the barrel was but it was about 26-28" long and heavy and a DAMN GOOD shooter. Dose anyone out there know what a good twist rate for a heavy varmint type barrel should be? By the looks of things I have a boatload of 85 to 100 grain bullets still in the cabnet.

A 1 in 10 should handle everything up to 105 grains, but if you use a more modern vld bullet you may need to go to 1 in9 or 1 in8.5 but the faster twist could blow up bullets if they spin to fast.

With the velocity you will get you should be ok with a 10 up to 100 grain. Jon is right if you spin them too hard with that velocity you could blow them up. Matt

Agree with caution on the spin. I have a .22-6mm with a 1-8 that will disintegrate some bullets that are not designed for the high rotational velocity you can achieve.

I have a Stiller Predator with a 1-10 Lilja that will NOT stabalize a 105 Berger VLD at an altitude of 2600 ft. It shoots 95 VLD's very well though. It does shoot 100 Partitions and 95 SST's very well also. I'd not go 10 if you ever want to shoot the heavy VLD's

My friends 240 Wea. (10 twist Krieger) shoots Horn 105 A-Maxs very nicely (ele. avg 1240 ft) winter -40 or summer +95. I agree though an 8 or 9 twist would be better for the most part with the range in length of the 105-108 class of bullets.
