As a 'newbie' with basic reloading and 'backyard' shooting skills, I think I would like to have a 6BR rifle built, to be used for varminting, local club shooting, and possibly as an entry level to competition. Can I get some recommendations? eg, barrels, actions, stocks, etc. I am a little bewildered by the different neck sizes used, but understand it would be simpler to use Lapua or Norma brass. Would appreciate some guidance.

A Remington 700 action or complete rifle would be a good place to start, unless you have the funds for a better build with a true custom action.
You can part out the 700 stuff you don't need to help out with the money part.
The 700 will probably need to be "tweaked a little" so there is more money spent.
A custom action has that done already, and only needs a good barrel installed to start shooting.
The custom action will always be worth more money than a tweaked 700 will...
The necks sizes are just a control over the brass in a tight necked chamber, and now days most folks are going with a standard no turn neck when they spec out a reamer to use...
I do like to turn them a bit to get things all even but it's not really necessary ...
Lapua is as good as it gets as far as brass for any given caliber they make it in...
My newest build will be on a Lawton 7500 action with one of there barrels in 6mm, and Joel Russo will start on the stock work.
Lots of other places to buy stuff that you would prefer to use for YOUR rifle.....

I'd read everything you can on this website, that will go a long way to answer your questions. Going out on a limb here I'd suggest an 8 twist with a .060 throat which would allow you to use bullets from 68-108 grains while you play around and decide just which way you want to lean as far as varminting or long range competition.

I was in your spot about a year ago when I decided to build a 6mmBr around Savages's LRPV action. I used a 5 groove 8 twist PacNOr with a 0.060 throat. I had the 87 gr Vmax in mind for a good all around bullet. I got my stock from SSS. I didn't get to shoot it as much as I wanted to this year and am still playing around with loads. Happily it shot a 4 bullet 300 yd group of just under 1" last time out. Un happily I DIDN'T shoot it. I had an informal contest with my son and he out shot me with my own rifle.
We actually shot six different loads that day and that was the best group. I've made up another 24 rounds awaiting another decent shooting day to confirm the result.
The rifle checked in at about $1100 w/o optic.
The load was 95 gr Nosler BT seated 0.005 into the lands, 30.5 gr Varget,,some minor cratering) and CCI 450, Lapua brass.
I am really happy with the rifle and would repeat the purchase if I had to do it again. Hope this is of some help, Hanic.

I think Preacher's recommendations are good. Start with a factory rifle and tweak it a bit.
Savage is making the LRPV in 6BR but one complaint I hear with it and with the 6.5X284 is that the throat is too long, making it hard to load for.

Consider a Remington XR-100 in 22-250,for the 308 bolt face). Buy a good quality match barrel such as a Krieger, get a 1:8 twist for maximum bullet flexibility. Get your gunsmith to install it and "blueprint" the action. It has a good stock for targets and varmints and a single shot action that is rigid and well-built.
This is an extremely popular way to build a 6BR in my part of the world, with many many shooters competing with them.

As a newbie, I will probably ask what appear to be very stupid, uninformed questions but as I stated in my other post to you, If I don't know, I ask. My question: Is it possible to take a CZ 550 Varmint rifle, caliber .22-.250 and turn it into a good BR rifle in 6mm or some other caliber that would be a better shooting,benchrest) rifle than the .22-.250? I got this rifle in a trade/buy a few months ago and it is nice but since I don't hunt and got it for it's potential as a target gun I have enjoyed it alot. But, I found out about 6mm shooting and really started digging into this subject and I love what I've discovered. I just wonder if I would be better off to trade or sell this rifle or take what I have and use it as a starting point to build a really good BR rifle by changing barrels, and whatever else would be required. Mine has the laminated, ventilated stock and heavy barrel. The action is very loose and sloppy and I dont' know if this is a characteristic of this particular gun or if it's worn alot more than the previous owner told me. Thanks in advance...........Van

I suppose you can make anything work if you spend enough time and money on it. I never worked with a CZ before so I can't be much help there, but it seems like a lot of folks like and use them...
Lots more toys for a 700 Remington build are available to use, but if you decide to use a BAT you'll never go back to a standard ever again.... especially one with a sloppy feel to it..
The 6br is a well know accurate chamber and most everyone can get em to shoot...
They will shoot about anything you can stuff into one, and the barrel will last and last like that bunny on TV........
Keep on asking and everyone will try to help you out as best they can.....
