Building a 6.5X47 Lapua

Hello Guys

I am new to the forum ... and have never built the specs for a custom rifle. I am an amateur and do not shoot competitively. Howerver, I do like to shoot accurate rifles.

A couple years ago, I bought an Allan Hall custom 6PPC at a gun show. It shoots in the 1’s and I really like it. To this point, I have shot heavy barreled factory rifles at 300 yards. However, I would like to build a rifle set up to shoot targets at 300 yards.

I am intrigued with the 6.5X47 Laupa. I have the opportunity to put together a rifle with a Panda action, Shilen light varmint 1:8 twist 26” barrel and Timney Calvin Elite trigger ... all bedded in a McMillan stock.

I welcome any and all comments regarding cartridge, action, barrel, trigger or stock.

Thanks ... CurlDog

I appreciate your comments. I considered a 6mm BR when looking at different cartridges for the rifle. I have been leaning toward a 6.5x47 Lapua ... but might reconsider my choice based on your comments. Thanks.

Mike

6 BR or 6.5x47. They are both great cartridges and both very easy to tune. For your stated purpose I would go 6 BR.

Thanks guys ... you got me thinking again on the cartridge. What about the Kelby Panda action ... any comments on it?

If you plan to stay at 300 yards, the 6br would be the best choice. If you ever decide you want to go farther, the 6br still does very well, but IMO, I would bump up to the 6.5x47L. (I am bias though, I have two of them already) Really hard to argue against either one, you may just have to flip a coin.

Guys

I appreciate your help regarding my decision on cartridge and components for a new rifle build. However, I have found one for sale that is VERY close what I would build ... except it has an integral 20 MOA rail.

I have not shot with a 20 MOA rail before. I understand how it would help if I decide to shoot longer distances, but am not sure how it would work at 300 yards. Can anyone help me determine how to calculate what the scope elevation adjustment needed at 300 yards? How many MOA’s? Is it a linear calculation?

Mike

Buy it with a 20 MOA rail! You’ll be thankful later in life when you stretch it out past 1000

If it is an 8" twist with generous free bore, I see a 6br in your future

With a 20 minute rail, my scopes will still adjust down to 100 yards. Not sure why you'd buy a flat rail, unless you wanted to buy rails twice. When you decide you want to shoot further. Which you will......

The 6.5x47 community is one of the best and its a nice all round versatile round that I love. If you are not going to compete then the 6.5x47 is a rifle that will serve you for a long time and do just about anything you ask it to. If you are going to compete though at anything under 500y then the 6BR might be your ticket if your are willing to accept the shorter barrel life.

Focus on your shooting technique. I think either of the recommended cartridges will out shoot just about any shooter except the very best. I am not a member of that group. Wish wish.

I’m no expert but I went with the 6.5x47. Had it built by RBROS. Shoots great and has very little recoil. Like someone else mentioned, I liked it so much I built a light weight version for a hunting rifle. Heavy practice gun shoots 130 Berger hunting at 2985 fps with H4350. Hunting gun shoots 130 Accubond at 2900 fps also with H4350. Took both guns to Texas this year and both bullets performed extremely well on deer and hogs.
