Building a 22br...

I scored another Howa action and am thinking i want to build a 22br. I have a 223ai, 223, and 222...but ive never had a "big" 22.

It will be shot from a bipod on a bench out to 250 yards....would i want to shoot the custom 52's or should i look at a little heavier?

will use lapua brass and 205m's. Hornady bushing dies.

no real dedicated purpose OTHER than punching paper (i MIGHT shoot some ground hogs with it, but that's usually relegated to my 6CM with 85's)

Your twist rate will determine what bullet you can shoot. 52's and 53's are popular at short range. I built a 1:7 twist shooting 80's for a balloon shoot. Sub 1/2" at 350 yards.

right....im teetering between a 1:14 and specifically going for some custom barts or bergers...... or a faster twist and shooting something like an 80gr.

im just not sure which way I should move. I do like the 53gr sierras.......but if i give up anything at 250yds to other bullets, i might be swayed AWAY from a 1:14

Not in 22BR, I have played with 1-12,1-9 and 1-8. I think a 1-10 might be a decent option if available. I slapped a prefit 22Nosler 1-8 twist together on a Howa, not seeing anything spectacular and wondering if I F’d up. About the time groups come together RPM’s rip up the bullet. I am going to try some heavier than 55’s, though they aren’t a varmint bullet.
This thing will either come together or it will be the last 8” twist I fool with in a .224 for my likings and purpose.
If I go to a .224,70 grain bullet or heavier I would just as soon shoot a 6mm pill in that weight.
I have a Cooper in 22BR that is ridiculous with a 40 grain bullet, believe it is a 1-12 twist. It is a blast to shoot and boringly accurate.
FYI double check reamer specs for the 22BR. Seems there are a fair number out there geared around the Remington case rather than the Norma/Lapua brass. Thread on the subject around here some where.
Look forward hearing more on your project.

I have shot .223's and .22-250's with 1:9 twist. They would shoot 30-80 grain bullets.

Just my preference, based on shooting several rifles I have in 22CF calibers from .223 Rem to 220 Swift (no 22brs, though); don't go slower than a 12 twist. A 14 twist limits bullet selection too much, imo.

I in 8 is my favorite. I have shot everything from 40 to 80 grain and they all shoot bug holes. Like the hammer of Thor on coyotes!

Single shot? You may have some feeding issues unless you already gave that figured out.

Not a problem with the proper mags or mag kits. AICS mags with the primal rights 6BR mag kits, or 6BR MDT (AICS) mags work great as well.

There's other solutions out there as well, but I've had great success with the above and 6BR variant cartridges.
