Building a 20incher

I would like to build a 20 incher to haul around my question is what caliber would be best from that length. I want a paper puncher/varmit rifle something with low recoil and cheap to shoot. Would the 6.5 creedmoor work, I would really like to give ita chance. Or next option .223, .243. I already have a .308 so thats out. What would be most efficient from 20-22 ins. pros and cons of each cal would be helpful too. It mostly likely will have a bartlein barrel and will be my first real custom with a blueprinted REM 700SA. I want to get it right 1st time.

The Creedmoor will work but keep it simple. Look at the 260 Remington. Brass can be made from 243, 7mm/08, or 308 all in a stroke. No changing shoulders, just a clean pull and there is your brass. The difference in 20 or 22 for me comes down to barrel contour and overall weight and what YOU want. Of course the 22 will give a tad more velocity but a 20 is really nice handling and being able to prove the performance difference in the field would be very hard. Me, I would do a 260 on a #5 contour at 20".

cant go wrong with an ar-15. sky is the limit on how much you want to spend. start with a good billet upper from sun devil manuf., and even a lower from them. drop a jewell 2 stage or a geiselle trigger, good quality bolt and carrier and a barrel from any of the big names in accuracy (free float it of course). pick one of the many chamberings out there--then top it off with a good scope. there is your paper punching vermin killer.

What bolt face dia. do you have? I've been wanting to build a 20" rifle for deer hunting and around where I live the deer ain't all that big! but there's a mess of them! too many really. I think I have narrowed my search down to a 6x45, it's not a speed demon but I can still get good enough velocity from an 80gr. bullet and it's a simple resize of very abundant 223 brass neck up to 6mm and your done. Hope this helps ya out didn't know if you wanted to go wildcat or factory offering just another thing to think about. Later,

Kirk

Go with a military caliber. If this is for running around with, it can be upsetting to lose match prepped brass in the grass.

My 20in AR in .223 is fun. But the bull barrel is not fun to lug around. I get 3000fps with 69gr SMK loads.

I think I am gonna stick to bolt gun. I have 2 ars they are fun to shoot. One is custom with a Pac Nor barrel in 6.8 the other an Armalite .223 they are fun but they bore me after awhile just not the same a the my 700P. I would like a round with some velocity and would nt feel comfortable shooting a Nebraska deer with a same caliber. I am leaning towards the .260 or 6.5 CM. I think..

It is hard to beat a .223 in a 20" truck gun. A savage action with good glass. If you change your mind change the barrel and bolt head to what ever caliber you want or need. Inexpensive and reliable.
