Build me a F-Class Open Rifle

I shoot in some informal LR Matches most 800 yards in. I'm 68 so doubt I'll travel far to shoot. I have to shoot off a bi-pod and rear bag at these club matches. Need a gun I can beat everyone with. These guys are purty good. Few of them build custom rifles. S&S Precision.

Thanks for your opinions and ideas. Also best places to find components.

1. Caliber
2. Stock
3. Action
4. trigger
5. Barrel
6. Etc.

I sent you a PM.

I shoot both of these matches and have seen quite a few combinations of rifles, Calibers, and shooters for that matter. I shoot one of the S&S Precision built rifle you are describing and have won a few of both of the matches you are talking about. If i can give you any advise at all, pick something you like, learn to load for it, learn to shoot it in the wind, and go have fun. I am usually at these two matches whenever they are held and am more than happy to answer any question you have either at the matches or on here. I dont know everything by any means, but you can have the Most expensive rifle at these matches, but if you cant load for it and shoot it, it doesnt make two $hits how much money it cost. Feel free to contact me and we can talk all you want.

If your game is at 500 yards, then it'd be hard to beat a straight 6BR shooting the ~105 class of bullets. I've called Jim Borden and listened to his advice a couple times now and he has built me rifles that I can't imagine being happier with.

Here's my take:
Borden BRM, Drop port configuration
Premium barrel of your choice, 8 twist, 28-29" HV contour
6BR, 0.272 neck, .104 or similar Freebore
Stock of your choice - I like to make my own so can offer little advice on where or what to buy
Let Jim time and tune a Jewell trigger to it for you.

EDIT: If you want something a little more exotic, but still easy: 22BR, 8 twist, 0.254 neck, 0.100 Freebore and shoot any of the 80gn class of bullets.

You are in Texas. Give Omar Alonzo a call. He is one of the best of the best. 713-283-4384... He builds A LOT of winning rifles>>>both F-Open and F-T/R...

I just shot next to Omar at the Tennessee State Match and him and some of his customers showed up and made a big statement at that match. He is a great shooter and smith also

Now you know why I made the statement "He builds A LOT of winning rifles"! And obviously you know he does, as he built his own rifle and WON! Virtually ALL of the shooters from Bayou Rifles that attended the Tennessee State Match, have "Omar built" rifles!

You don't have to spend that much I would suggest getting a savage LRP or preferably a LRPV and Rebarrel it into either A 6.5 or 6 millimeter of your choice my suggestion would be the 6 dasher, 6XC , 243 or actually the 6BR. I have a 6.5 creedmoor, 6BR and a 243 in this configuration that I shoot at 1k. If I do my part I can be really competitive with these rifles. I need my bushing dies.

Look up SG Rifles ( Tom "Speedy" Gonzalez). He'll properly direct you for all your concerns. Exquisite work. He's in Texas.

Greetings all!!

Yes I know this is an old thread however its exactly the subject of my question(s). So I figured why start another thread, might serve somebody good as it did me continuing it / adding to it.

Very short story. I have been shooting for awhile military, LEO and civilian competition as well as precision loading. I am by no means an expert, learn something new everyday and love the shooting sports as I always have.

Anyways I am getting ready to dip my feet (little more than toes) into a F Class rig. F Class Open is my drive.

With all that said I am getting ready “squeeze off” and get a build going. So with that said I am curious from those with much more experience if I am on the right track with weight as a concern. Yes there are a few variables with the “or” but I have narrowed it down considerably hence the list.

Thank you all very much in advance.

I love you guys!!! Thanks for plating along. Here's my deal. I have a custom ALTUS 6.5 Creedbore, It shoots really good but its more set up for Hunting with its Swaro Z6 5-30 with a set Ballistic turret.
The group of goof balls I shoot with are all on the Texas Hunting Forum. Anyway one of the guys has a sweet little 500 yard range where we have LR Rimfire and 500yd steel challenge, which is start on the 8" plate, to 6" then to a 4". Its a double elimination, which means you could shoot a few rounds or 100. There are 20 of us this next match in September.

I'm going try and make it work with the Ballistic turret instead of a dialing turret this time. If I get my azz handed to me then it's time to build a winner or at least NOT Dead Azz Last.

I guess my budget would have to be $3K-$4K without optics.

I also just had a new .223 built by Alamo Precision Rifles near me. I'm waiting on my new NX8 MOA/SFP to arrive in a couple weeks.

The only "Rules" so far on these matches is must shoot-off a bipod with a rear bag, no Machine Rest AKA Open Class. I probably wont shoot anymore true FClass cuz I'm 68 and don't want to drive all over the country. Been There Did That. Gun Then was a custom, single shot 7mmWSM

I'm thinking this gun will be one of the very popular 6mm's. One which I can buy brass and do minimum brass prep (no-turn) . Really would like to get away from the bushing dies also.

Guess I'm gettin old AND lazy !!
You don't want an F open rifle then because you'll be attaching a bipod instead of shooting off of a rest. I personally love the 7mmWSM and what I use hunting 90% of the time. That said if I was to have a custom one built I'll have it custom chambered using 270 or 300 brass so I can get a longer neck but then you are talking custom everything. Personally if I build another 7mm I'm going to get build a 284 Winchester.

I just had Alamo build me a new 6br. 737 action, Bartlein heavy varmint, got it sitting in a MPA Matrix chassis, and topped with a Vortex Razor gen 2. Liking it so far.
