Bugholes / Southern Precision Rifles

Hello All,

Who out there has direct experience working with SPR down in Cookeville, TN?
Because of his direct relationship with Bartlien I am having a Savage Pre-fit made that should only take 3 1/2 months to get into my hands.

Just looking for feedback from shooters who have working with them getting services rendered.

Greg is good guy, but my only experience is a 7wsm that the reamer had a 30° shoulder( PTG) instead of a 35°. Ptg wouldn't do anything about their bad reamer.20180204_123215.png he corrected it but it took forever.
I will add I GET SCREWED MORE TIMES THAN NOT. Doesn't matter who it is.

Not saying this is the case here at all- gotta put that out there- but a cheap or fast gunsmith sometimes is a clue. Dont shop according to lead time or price.
Cheap
Fast
Quality
(You can only pick two and sacrifice the other)
Quality dosen't come cheap
Fast dosen't make for quality
So I'd choose quality, and learn patience.
Something I have to work on daily.

I totally understand the points everyone is making about "time and quality".
I mentioned lead time only because I was told over the phone that because of their relationship with Bartlein their orders are fulfilled in 3 months vs 5-6.

Something about my conversation on the phone with them regarding the prefit process had be wondering if I should just grab the blank when its ready and have Hart in NY finish the job.

I'll take that bet.

You put processes into place and get a staff spun up on how to do a job, and BOTH become very, very realistic. I've proven it now for a decade.

This is a tradesman craft. It's not art, it's not hocus pocus. It's fundamental machine work and if you approach it accordingly, there is no reason to not have a predictable outcome.

PS. Greg at SPR is a good egg, he does good work, and "artists" are unemployed guitarists doing Nirvana covers on street corners for cigarette money.

I've gotten 6 barrels from them over the years. Great guys to deal with. Never had them do a chamber though.

Ill admit you do a dandy job for sure. How much do you get for a chamber job with a customer supplied barrel? If the barrel hit your mailbox today and you had the reamer how long would it be to get finished and back in the mail?

I have purchased blanks from him in the past and had him order profiles he normally does not stock as he can get blanks faster than I can I buy one of two at a time and he buys a lot more so he goes ahead of me in the line I understand that. I have always had great service from Greg and others I have referred to him have had great service also.

I have bought 4 Kelbly actions from Greg/SPR. I have been to his home/business. I have found him to be savvy, knowledgeable, and professional while providing timely service and a good value.

I've had one Bartlein/Savage bug-nut prefit chambered by them. They did a very good job with it; chamber job looked great on the borescope, and the rifle shot well.

I buy lots of blanks from him. I like the fact he not only shows "in stock" but just how many of that barrel are actually in stock.
He ships fast and any time I've had a question he answers quickly.
A buddy has had two Savage barrels done by him and both are great shooters.

Just follow the link to the store and it'll walk you through the admin process.

Timeline. Our goal is 96 business hours from the time the job hits the floor and we have all the stuff in front of us. That is for a basic thread, chamber, cut to length, cnc engraving, and thread muzzle/crown. Generally speaking, we hold to that quite well. Some are the same day, some take a day longer if were stacked up.

Shipping can lag as well. We do a lot of work here and my poor wife has to acuire/dispo all the receivers as part of the FFL admin nausea. I do a lot of contract receiver work so it's not uncommon for us to log in 40-50-60 receivers at a whack. That burns the clock and she handles all the shipping as well.

Fluting, cerakote, muzzle brake installation is a little longer. Muzzle brake stuff only applies to ours because the way our brake is designed, it is not ported until after the brake blank is installed, contoured, and fitted. This is because we size the ports based on the OD finish size and time them post-installation as we can control the clocking much, much easier.

Our C/K dept does get backed up from time to time as I do a great deal of contract work for a big OEM.

The worst-case scenario is we are around 18 days.
