Bug out bag for the modern Daniel Boon

Grimstod

Machinist, Designer, and Shooter.
I remember reading that Daniel Boon would go into the woods for long hunts that lasted months. He would only take a few lead shots (I think it was 5) and a horn full of powder. When he shot his game he would salvage the lead, remelt it over the fire and then use it again. This way he got as much as a hundred shots out of very little weight in ammo carried.

So here is what I was thinking. Make a bug out bag that will sorta do the same thing but with modern bullets for one of todays rifles. Lets pick 308 winchester since its really common. I was planning on getting these for the bag.
40rd of Lapua brass
Some powder, enough for 200rds
Lee Loader to do the loading,
Some sort of way to trim.
Enough powder to reload up to 200 rds
Primers of course but in a sealed container
Bullets, say Burger VLD 150gr to keep it light. Two boxes does not weight to much.

Have any suggestions or other equipment ideas that might lighten the load?

Wouldnt just carrying 200 loaded rounds be easier and simpler? ::) Besides everyone knows if it comes down to that the 12gauge shotgun would be the go to gun. You could pack slugs and buck shot and bird shoot and kill way more for food than any other cartridge would.

223REM ammo is a lot lighter than 308.....military finally caught on to that a few decades ago. Oh and yes, carrying 200 loaded rounds would be way simpler....therefore it cannot be an option. ;D

Wouldn’t it be easier, more accessible (already loaded), lighter (no tools, no boxes to hold and protect the separate components), and better quality (since you don’t have to load with minmum tools) to just load up 200 rounds and carry that.

That was the beauty of lead round balls in the 1700's, dig it out of your kill and melt it down again and Daniel Boone can go "kilt another bar" as I am sure many other patriots and sharpshooters did during the day. But will have to agree that the prudent thing to do is carry your loaded ammo with you now a days and not your reload bench along with the components.

I have been a major fan of anything Daniel Boone for about 50 years and also a Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and Jim Bridger fan. Love the post Grimstod!

I would want the gun to reach at least a 800 yards. The idea of doing the Danial boon thing just sorta intrigued me. I have a Lee Loader kit, its supper light. weighs about what 100 peaces of brass does.

If going after just small game, I would carry a 44 magnum revolver for protection with about 100 rounds. And I would carry a high powered air rifle with at least 1000fps capability I have a container of 600 pellets that's just a little bigger than a snuff can..

I think you all have great ideas. The only thing that I might add is I would take a 22 mag and at least 500 rounds with me and a pistol with some ammo and a lee loader in 32 h&r magnum with some bullets and powder and primers. The only thing you guys have left out is some water, dried food and medical supplys. For at least 60 days. Taking extra water filters to replenish your supply so you don't die of thirst. I would take a few things for trade like otc pain meds to barter with and some money. The only other thing that would come in handy is sleeping materials like a bivey and sleeping bag and soap.

I hope you don't really believe that Daniel Boone left for Kentucky with only 5 bullets in his bag! Probably took all he could carry on the pack horse.

I could see him in a battle with the Indians...after he shot his 5 shots...he yelled TIME OUT..so he could dig his 5 balls out..get real

I think you'd reduce the complexity by sticking with a straight walled cartridge...maybe a .44 mag or a .45-70. Those bigger, slower bullets would not necessarily give you 800 yards, but do you really need 800 yards...I would venture to say if you were a good hunter like Boone, 200 yards would be a likely long range maximum, and under 100 yards would be typical. I grew up in Ohio, and the woods there were thick...in the one area of mature hardwoods I hunted in, 50 yards was about max...

I do agree that the best method would be to just stick to a modern barreled muzzle-loader, or a decent compound bow with carbon arrows for those that really know how to hunt :)

recasting the salvaged lead requires, a container of some sort to hold the lead while heating, possibly a "dipper' as shown in the Patriot film, a set of molds for the casting, and some spare lead as you may not find all 5 of those after shooting.

forget it, use a muzzle loader and carry the projectiles with you, or as noted

also consider the Lyman tong tools - used for years to reload

The benefits of DB's system is that it's light weight and sustainable by reusing bullets. Carrying around lots of bullets and brass seems like it defeats the purpose. So in-line muzzle loader and some modern bullet like a T/C maxi-ball mold (although I'm sure there's better cast ML bullets I'm just not that up on them) and Blackhorn 209. For a cartridge set-up I'd go single shot rifle in 357 Maximum. The air rifle idea is a good one too.

right, carrying around enough powder to reload 200 shots, and enough lead balls to make said 200 shots is more efficient that dropping 200 loaded 308/223/30-30 rounds in your bag?

And you're counting on recovering the shots for recasts. Don't miss, and don't shoot at close range.

Boon and Crockett (among many others) were both the subjects of some pretty tall tales. (which one grinned the bark off of a tree?)

As for fighting Indians, that was one shot and you are hand to hand in most cases. Ever actually loaded a patch and ball rifle. That would take some really out of shape Indians not to cover about 500 yards between reloads.

Good point XTR

Well my reasoning for the 800 yard limit is that if the country should fall apart I would not be hunting just animals.
By the way I am in no way a conspiracy or post apockolyps believer. This post is really just for the theory of it and though I might assemble what's needed. I really never see that scenario coming to pass.

Grimstod If It comes to the Country falling apart you might consider taking the other guys stuff while you are on the run! Seen a the Moves were they leave the Machine gun and keep using their pistols. Only in the Moves
