budget rifle for 50-100 yards

A buddy of mine might be having a friendly competition, with a $600 budget. Whoever can shoot the best group consistently at either 50 or 100 yards, still undecided. My savage 22 already shoots 1 hole groups at 50 and that was a $250 build... if we go to 100, I'd want to jump to a little more powerful round. What would be a good route? I'd want to load for it too.

For our friendly competitions, we use 22LR. I have a Savage MKII, with a Vortex Crossfire fine crosshair. Shooting at golf balls at 100yds, and small steel at 125yds. I'm using the cheap brown box 22LR from Walmart. Shoots great out of this rifle. I've tried the more expensive stuff and the brown box is still cleaner and just as accurate. I can't shoot one hole at 50yds with this rig. It could be me? I have about 20 magazines. Load them up and have fun.

I have a mkii with a simmons predator that'll shoot .75" 5 shots at 100 and i only have $250 in it. Not sure how soon it'll be happening but i considered 17 wsm, 22 mag, 223, 22 250. We did pick 100 yards, off a bipod, and shooting prone. Just a matter of when we do it. I asked what he wanted the winnings to be. he said the gun :o so yeah, I'm up for that, I'm a scope shooter and he's an iron sight kinda guy, and builds on a budget with every gun he does.
