BRX Expander Die

Old Navy

Gold $$ Contributor
I have finally shot my 6BR barrel out. The replacement will be a BRX. I have read everything I can find on fire forming the cases. I have just one question on the false shoulder method. What .257 Lyman M die will work for me? Thanks. Later! Frank

All you need is any expander. I like the ones from russ haydons that are short and a expander die only. You can get any size expander you want and change them out.

This is the die I use and I put a .260 expanding mandrel in there. I recently went through the process of figuring out the false shoulder. Once I got it down it worked like a champ.
Here is my method
1)expand the 6BR brass with the desired mandrel.
2)I use Redding competition bushing die. I raise the dial all the way.
3)Run the expanded brass into the die.
4)Lower the dial and bushing till I feel contact.
5)Raise the ram and remove the brass.
6)Turn the dial down about .075
7)Run the die into the bushing.
8)Try and chamber the round. You want the bolt to be a little bit stiff when you drop it.
9)If it is a no go then size the neck a thou or two more till it is stiff to close the bolt. You want to size just under half of the .210 neck.

Also remember that the 6br and 6BRX are the same lenght but the neck is shorter on the BRX.

Hope this helps.

Thanks limbic. I was out cleaning up my reloading bench this morning and found the Sinclair die. Forgot I bought it when I was turning cases. I just ordered a mandrel. Thanks for the step by step directions. Later! Frank

I've had excellent luck simply fireforming - so good in fact, that I shot a local club match with the ammo as the accuracy was superb.

Did nothing special - loaded my 6BR ammo in the 6BRX chamber and shot - pushed out the shoulder and shot a 198 out of 200.

I've chambered 3 barrels to BRX and formed the brass this way on all of them.

I am going to try both ways, measure the cases and decide which is best for me. This is quite a controversial topic. Later! Frank

you might want to investigate a Hornady hydraulic forming die. It makes short work of forming while reducing the amount of barrel wear due to fire forming. It is a little messy but not difficult. The die is custom built for your cartridge so they take a while to get.
