Brux Barrels - UPDATE

I'd just like to make a couple points about Norm Brux and his barrels. Not only does Brux make a fine barrel that shoots very well, he's a good guy with whom to do business. I called Norm last week to order a special barrel, not a catalogued item. I ordered a 35" (34" finish) caliber .30, 10" twist, straight Ø1.25" blank. It arrived today. I don't know whether he had it in stock or made it the next day. Either way, delivery time and service like that would be difficult to improve. Thanks, Norm. [br]

I spoke to Norm Brux today to thank him for shipping the barrel so quickly. He explained that, when I called last week, they had a 35", caliber .30 unrifled blank and he just happened to be rifling caliber .30, 10" twist barrels. The blank was on the rifling machine 30 minutes after the call. Norm was quick to note that they cannot offer this kind of service to all customers. It was just a very lucky coincidence. Doesn't matter, I'll take it! Thanks again to Brux Barrels for fine products and a customer focus that's second to none.

I just did a review for PS Magazine and the Brux 6mm barrel chambered in 6mm Dasher performed exceptionally. James

That barrel you tested sure shoots exceptional.I keep hearing how nice his barrels are and would love to try one on my next build.

Interesting. It appears to prefer .015 off with RL-15, but .020 off with Varget.

I am shooting two Brux barrels in the Dasher and those groups are not exceptional, they can get better. He makes a very good barrel, mine are 7.83-1 twist........jim

NOT EXCEPTIONAL?? Really! I noticed that you did not post any of your exceptional groups. I may be wrong, but you sound like a typical "barber shop shooter". That is a person who claims that his pet rifle will shoot 0.5 inch groups at 300 yards all day long....if he does his part. Of course the last person to get the floor at the local barber shop always has the best shooting rifle.

PS- The groups above were shot while looking for the best load in the new barrel. I did this test with my 600 yard loads to prepare for the monthly 600 yard competition at Howard Prince Range. By the way, I won the match shooting 105 Berger Hybrids pushed by Reloder 15. Good shooting....James

I think you mis-interpreted the man's comment. Rather than a criticism, I think he meant to say that those nice groups are not uncommon from Brux barrels.

James, i mean that the barrels can do better, my light gun just before the national ran10 shot .084, but the old barrel shoots better in the wind but not going to go under the one's anymore. The last match is the 27th at Harry Jones then we will talk groups........ jim

Tony, Yes sir, but the heavy gun killed me it wouldn't eject all the time one time it turned one backwards. So i shot a big one, Va state i forgot to shoot 10 shots. It's hell to get old. I'm going to get one more Bat B. How did you do this year?......... jim

I also have had real good luck shooting BRUX Barrels this year. I won the 2012 F-Class Nationals FTR division with one that has 3000 rounds on it. I also set a new National Record at 150-11X with the same barrel. Many thanks to Norm and Ken.

WHAT does "OFF JAM" Mean in this Context?
Hopefully James can clarify the position of his seated bullets relative to first jacket-to-barrel contact. If James means "Jam" to mean the furthest he can load into the lands without bullet set-back*, then " .020 off Jam" could still be contacting the lands .005" or more.

On the other hand, if James means "Jam" to refer to the point where the bullet just touches the rifling, then " .020 off Jam" could be jumping the bullets.

But there may yet be a different meaning of "Jam" as used by James here -- he'll have to fill us in. I am guessing his "JAM" reference is probably about .025 past initial jacket to barrel land contact, but that's just a guess.

Accordingly, I think James' labels of ".015 off Jam" and ".020 off Jam" etc. could still be contacting the rifling. Of course, I could be dead wrong (James please correct me as needed)....

Because of the inherent confusion in the "Jam" terminology*, in our tests we try to state seating depth relative to the point of initial bullet jacket to barrel contact, measured multiple times with a Hornady tool.

NOTE: I am NOT criticizing James' testing or how he reports his results. I think it's fantastic he showed his Dasher results above. Just noting that "Jam" can mean different things to different people.

*Another reason why this common use of "JAM" to indicate max possible (longest) seating depth can be confusing, is that this "JAM length" can and does vary based on neck tension and other factors. So, it may be difficult for someone to reproduce ".XXX off JAM", because the "JAM length" is not an absolute. There is nothing wrong with this way of using (and talking about) "JAM", but it can be confusing.

On the other hand, if you reference your seating depths relative to the position of first bullet jacket to barrel contact (measured with a Hornady tool), this usually IS repeatable no matter what the neck tension. With experience (and good bullets) we can usually measure distance to first bullet jacket to barrel contact, 5-6 times with about .002 max spread.

That said, I have personally found that it was very frustrating to measure the Berger 6mm 105 hybrids (length to lands) using the Hornady tool. Honestly, I can get repeatable measurements with just about every other bullet I've tried, but we found those Hybrids very tricky to work worth. I am commenting only on the measuring tasks. They shoot great, as James demonstrates.

I have 3 Brux barrels. 7 and 8 twist. HV & No Taper.
All are 6 mm Dasher. They have hits to one mile on
Ole Chuckie. I'll buy another!!!!

Form Boss, I prefer to use zero as a ref. point then i work from there. I've shot the 105H from .060 jump to .015 in and the bullet will shoot in.200 everywhere but at .010 in it will shoot in the .080's with two different powders. These are 5 and 10 shot groups. after that us use the wind to tell me the rest,if it doesn't shoot in the wind i screw it off.The Brux for some reason seem to like the wind and i have 4 that are good or better,one came from a forum member and it is great...thank you Donovan.........jim
