I have a knock-off of the Defiance rear-entry wrench (not sure the brand) and I can remove factory actions with it and a 2-foot breaker-bar.

I haven't used a bruno's barrel vise. It may be a good vise and hold the barrel well. But just about any vise that doesn't engage the recoil lug will be challenged with a rem factory barrel.

I would not use a rear entry wrench to remove a rem factory barrel. I use a rear entry wrench for everything except a rem factory barrel. For that I get out the big wheeler external wrench that I can slug. You certainly will have to exceed the recommended max torque on an internal wrench and take a chance on damaging the lugs. I see GenePoole uses an internal wrench so I guess it can be done.

Thanks - I appreciate the input. I will go with the Wheeler wrench. I will be saving the barrel for possible reuse and I have no lathe so parting is not possible.

There are a lot of variables out there so I appreciate the know how from you guys so I won't be making scrap metal!

The trick is to support the other end of the setup (at the breaker-bar head) with a 4x4 cut to match the height of the vise. A small channel is cut in the end of the 4x4 for the breaker-bar to pivot. Arrange it so that the breaker-bar arm is just a few degrees above horizontal, then with all my mass, I jump up and heave down on the bar. It's probably funny to watch. Maybe I'll make a video next time.

OH my. I understand the physics and agree you're managing the forces but sounds scary!!! also sounds like it works.

How about torsion? The internal wrench will twist and put a lot of force on the rear lugs, twisting the action into a spiral.

The wrench I use only has bearing surfaces at the front. The only torque transferred to the action is very near the threads. If it twists up in that short distance, then something is wrong with the steel.

Here is one good option. Pma tool makes the one i have now except theirs is stainless. Mine is a 30yr old brownells.
