We have two 14 inch chop saws in our shop, and went to the Diablo Carbide Blades.I've been using a saw similar to these for several years now. It uses a carbide blade and there is virtually no heat or stress put into the bbl. The heat goes away with the chip. They are fast and easy but blades are fairly expensive and you can't abuse them and expect the blade to hold up.
It's pretty remarkable how it induces no heat to the part.
if used correctly, it is amazing the amount of cutting one will do before it is unusable.
As for cutting off barrels. I part them off in the lathe, leaving 1/4 inch to face off and crown.
I suspect many barrel makers suggest sawing barrels because they have no idea who will be doing the work On the barrel when it leaves their facility. Any competent machinist knows how to use a parting tool.
Anybody can use a saw.
