Broken Wilson 6br Decap Pin ?

I've loaded about 500+ 6mm br with my Wilson dies without a problem. Then I broke the decap pin. I thought it happened when the primer stayed on the shelf inside the base. I could not find any online, and my Gunsmith repaired mine and I also bought an extra from him that he made.

First box of 20, and I broke the repaired pin !*&%#.

Any one have problems with these? Or de-prime before sizing? Was I just unlucky that two broke so close together, and these pins break once and a while?

Thanks,
JIm

Are you using the Wilson dies with an arbor press? If so, I would buy a cheap press and use the RCBS Universal Decapping Die.

Hmm. Never had one break. Sinclairs carries Wilson dies & stuff, or you could contact Wilson directly: http://www.lewilson.com

I am surprised so many good shooters (on 6 BR forums and others) discuss resizing and decapping in one step, which means that cleaning was done without cleaning the primer pocket, or not done yet and dirty shell could score the die body. I'd like feedback on my assumption that decapping first is easy with a universal die, then cleaning will include the primer pocket, and resizing can be done with the decap pin removed. Does the intact decap pin serve any function if there's no need for expanding. (I can use an expander mandrel on new brass, or for correcingt an excessively small bushing neck size. Am I missing something? So far, run-out is good, results are good. I have a lot of decapping pins/rods lying inside their die boxesunused.

If it was a Wilson arbor press die, it's neck sizing only. While you may scratch the inside of the bushing, that's a relatively inexpensive repair. Hitting the necks with steel wool after firing cleans them up as well as any other method of cleaning.

As an aside, Lapua 6BR brass has the smaller flash hole. Most dies come with pins that will not fit without swaging the flash hole larger as it goes through. If you use Lapua 6BR brass, make sure you either obtain a small decapping pin (.054" vs .062"?) or turn the supplied one down. Wilson (and Redding, I believe) come with the small decap pin, but it would be good to check.

Wilson supplied an extra decapping pin with my Die.
I would start there as well

I just bought one of the mighty armory decapping dies for my br brass. Love it and it’s priced very well. Included a letter from the company thanking me for my purchase. Also nice

My Redding 6br dies came with an extra decapping pin and a smaller expander button. These are type S f.l. Dies.

im willing to bet you have a BR rem die being old school like that and you swaged your flash holes with the big decap pin til it finally broke

JHS comes in here new (1 message), responding to a 12yr old thread........

Sorry about the old thread. I asked the administrator if they could delet post older than 3 or 5 YO to clean up the website. He said no there might be good info. Most questions are asked many times a year so I don't see any problem deleting.
