Bringing supplies in from Canada

I have a work trip to Canada next week, and if by chance I come across some powder, is it possible to legally bring it back to the US?

I doubt it,if you get caught sneaking it ,I am sure homeland security would make an example out of you.Be careful and call customs to see if it is possible.

That's the only way, (legally), I would do it. I will talk to customs entering Canada and our customs here before I leave. Thanks

Canada Border Services Agency (cbsa.ca) (Agence des services frontaileurs du Canada). I would absolutely call in advance and preferably get to the place where you plan to cross the border by phone.

The phone process alone may show it's not worth the trouble. They will answer the phone in French but are all bilingual.

I talked to a friend of mine who has made the pilgrimage lately. He said reloading supplies are available in Canada but the amount you can bring in to the US legally is limited. So before you think you are going to go over and make a “killing” by bringing in lots of stuff to resell or even for your own use, check with the boarder people to get the facts first.

Also remember if you go over to buy and bring back, it is actually the US custom that you have to deal with and not the Canadian….

This is true. However depending on where you cross the border you will be standing in Canada talking to US Custom (and immigration). You want to be sure at both ends that you can depart Canada with these items and then enter the US also.

I will talk to our local customs office. It would only be for my use, and it would be the US customs to satisfy. They will know the law on it and it may be to much red tape. I was hoping someone on the forum may have been through this already. Thanks for the replies

Another related question is what permit or license do you need to show to the vendor especially if it is for a gunpowder purchase.

I have brought it across myself, don't think a US Citizen can in todays world, pre-911 we thought nothing of dragging stuff back and forth as we saw fit.

I know that a Canadain Citizen who has prior approval from the BATFE can once they file paperwork.......

Hi all

I'm surprised everybody here seems to be surprised that the customs is a reality we have to cope with when we want to import goods....And the more so when it is related to firearms, especially now!!!Nobody where I live would disregard them, unless they're ready to deal with law enforcement forces that have a right to break into your house at any itme of day and night without warrant!!!!!It's that serious here, and they charge quite heavy when they "catch" you, believe me....Try and keep away from these guys, avoid them the more you can, they're a real plague...

Was talking with a guy from Canada in a local Cabela's one day and he pointed out that "they" were only allowed to bring one lb. of powder back with them.

If that's the same for US Customs it wouldn't be worth the extra "conversation" one would be subjected to when returning to the US.

This sounds about right and I think my buddy told me that he was limited to 500 primers. I did not post this specific info since it is second hand but the idea that you have limits I think is solid. Best to ask so that you are not suprised....

Canada is very strict and both sides watch things pretty close. Many items are available in Canada and sometimes the same for the USA.

From people I have talk to, DON'T DO IT. Don't try to cross the border with goods purchased on either side.

One person I spoke with ended up arrested in Canada for something we consider everyday life in the lower 48!

I can't even ship anything to Canada. If an order is received, it's reversed/refunded instantly.

In fact, my system will lock the order if "Canada" is mentioned anywhere in the order.

Legally it can be done, lot's of paperwork and "very" expensive for the buyer.

here in canada we dont have to show anything to buy powder! we have to sign a powder log at the store with name, phone# and thats it! loaded bullets is another whole story!!

If you do buy powder in Canada don't tell them your an American because Americans are the cause of the shortages they have in Canada.

In a recent visit to the Canadian Gun Nutz forum a few unkind words were being said about shortages and Americans. I replied that I hope your oil sand dries up and the Chinese stop buying Canadian timber to make chop sticks.

Canadian joke..............

Why is the White House white?
That's the color you painted it after we burnt it down.

The Canadians have been telling that joke since 1812, so don't get caught buying their powder and bullets........it could get ugly.

You might end up duct taped to a bull moose in heat. :)

I think it is actually stricter to get things into Canada than into the US.

You are absolutely allowed to buy things in Canada (or any other country that you travel in) and bring them into the US, have been doing it for years. It is just that you have to declare them when you cross the border and the amount which is tax exempt is limited and other than the obvious banned stuff, there are limits on what and how much you can bring in for certain goods. As long as you abide by the law and limits and you make the proper declaration you are OK.

As usual with this kind of stuff, ask and you will receive the correct information to result in a trouble free crossing.
