Brass shavings in FL sizing die

Take a hard look at your shell holder. I had a similar problem and the retaining groove for the case was built up with case lube. Had to use a 90 degree pick tool to scrape the build up out of the shell holder.

The build up was hardley noticeable but it was enough to keep the case from centering in the die and the die was skiving a hair thickness wire of brass off the case above the extractor groove.

I regularly clean my shell holders (Redding Competition) every few hundred rounds with a qtip and alcohol. I just checked and it did have a little bit of brass shavings but I'm not sure it's the cause

If brass is being shaved off it would show up as bright on the case. In post #10 there doesn't appear to be any bright areas on the body or neck, just the rim area.

I have never had this problem before i started using forster benchrest FL sizing die with my 7x57. Before this I have used hornady, RCBS and lee dies for various cartridges and never had a problem. Maybe it's because of the tighter tolerances?

I get the same brass shaving schmutz as you show in your first post. It will build up to the point I need to wipe it off after about 15 cases. With mine, here is something odd.... the schmutz only shows up on one area of the resizing die base. To put it another way, the schmutz only builds up at the 5 o'clock position on the die base.

I have no clue what is causing it, or how to fix it. I just make sure it doesn't build up. The loads I'm making are shooting great, so I kinda keep it in the back of my mind and will watch for reduced brass life

Looks to me like your chamber is oversize at the base. Excess polishing or runout during chambering can do that

I think you may be right, I can see very fine scratches on the base of my cartridges. hard to see without direct light and magnification, but they are there. What I am still pondering is why is it only showing up at 5oclock on the shell holder and die?

As suggested, the shavings are from the bottom half of your brass. If you continue to use that die, expect case head separation as the area being shaved will continue to get thinner and thinner.

As suggested, fire a couple of case at least three times, send them to Harrells and buy a die that fits your chamber.

I have this same issue on 3 different cartridges, only with Redding dies 219 wasp 307 IMP 308 IMP I will be polishing them when I am not doing anything else.... to mad to do it now these are the last three sets in a row I had another issue sometime ago I did call Redding once was left unimpressed with the resolve then, I know this is now yada yada
