brass question-herters, 222 rem-updated 9/21/11

A friend gave me some brass a couple of years ago. It was herters packaged, in boxes of 20. the box says match grade, made by the best brass manufacturers in the world, and has made in sweden all over it. It was new brass, but very old at the same time. there aren't any lot# on any of the boxes. Just wondering if this was actually made by Norma, I hope!! does anyone have any clue to this?

Herters (Model Perfect) was made by Norma. I had some 223 brass, years ago, that was 2 Gr. heavier than miltery brass. It gave me high pressures in a 17x223 with the same loads used in the military brass.

thanks for the reply, as well as the info about brass thickness. I guess my load testing will start all over. didn't think about brass thickness on it.

I have a load of herters 250 savage that was turned into 22-250. It is good quality brass and made by norma. You might need to anneal just the neck due to its age after you frie form it. I still have a brick of model perfect primers from back in the day when herters was king of sportsmans needs. Even at the time their prices were more reasonable than just about anywhere.

I miss herters wish book it was much better for a 8-10 year old boy than a sears catalogue

I still have some Herter's brass in 6.5x55, but seldom shoot that Swedish Mauser anymore. The brass was made by Norma. Good stuff

well, the brass thickness did change things. both loads I had worked out with R-P brass were hot with the herters brass, and didn't group well at all.
52HPBT matchkings I had loaded with IMR4198, 20.5 grains were flattening out primers pretty good. I went down to 20.0 grains, and groups went from 3/4" plus to 0.395" and 0.216" for 3-shot groups. very good indeed. bad news is that I had my best luck before with 52hp berger bullets. I bought 500 of them. I had them loaded with N133, 21.0 grains. I had them shooting 1/4" groups, now they are around 1/2" and up. I went down 0.5grains in those as well, and it helped some, but not a large improvement like the other load. Now with 21.0 grains it didn't show any flattening of primers, should I lower it some more, or go up? decisions, decisions. gotta love playing with loads.

Try benchmark with the 52 grainers. It works really well in .223. I dont have my manual handy, but I am sure it would work.

Herters brass is soft i try ed loading the same load in herters brass as i did with Remington brass and the primers where flattening out and the bolt was hard to lift. I went down 1gr and every thing was fine.
