Brass neck cleaning

From what I have seen 100/200 yard shooters rarely clean anything but the neck, it's the long range guys that sonic clean or tumble in stainless and anneal every firing.

I rarely clean the inside of the necks these days apart from blowing any media dust of them.

Carbon inside the neck is beneficial for bullet seating.

I know of guys who are afraid to use 0000 steel wool saying that it may get inside the cartridge case and then cause serious problems.
I also think the residue from 0000 steel wool as well as the residue from Scotch-Brite may get in the cartridge case so I always blow the case out with compressed air to prevent this. This step adds very little time to the reloading process.

Not true. Most 100/200 yard competitive shooters do not want to introduce dirt and other residue to the inside of a die. Wiping down the outside of the entire case takes only seconds and is the prudent thing to do. Some of the lazy ones might only wipe down necks but most of us clean the outside of the entire case. :)

"Never Dull" is easy to use, a little piece last a long time and does a great job considering the effort it takes. A can will last a couple years unless you waste it, when I finish my brass I just put the piece I've been using back into the can. My local "Do It Best" hardware store carries it, we have a local military school and the students use it to polish their brass buttons on their dress uniforms, lots of uses for it. Mack

I use the Sinclair case spinner set up and metal polishing pads that can be purchased at local hardware stores. I clean the inside of the neck with a plastic bore brush. I never clean the inside of cases. Barlow

Thank you all for the support, I'm off to get some #000 steel wool.

I assume that steel wool can also be used on "Silver" cases, or is there special tricks for reloading this type of case?
I had some Winchester "Silver" cases that I thought I would reload with my other brass.

Chaps here have been touting #0000 steel wool, not 000. Typo?

I also recommend #0000 steel wool. Also use it to burnish the case mouths before seating bullets. Really eases bullet entry.

My bad #0000 steel wool.

I also am going to try never dull, I think I have some at home, on the top shelf, way in the back, out in the shed.

I never throw anything away. (lol...)

Thanks again all, Bob

Just for the information, short range benchrest shooters generally FL size, which involves lube, and removing lube, which requires wiping off the cases. It has been kind of funny that in the past, in online discussions where I have heard from guys who would not use 0000 because it would wear out necks....yea right. I have some cases with a lot of firings on them, and I now how to use my case neck mic, that reads to .0001 and can be interpolated to half that. No way. That was not experience talking. It was ignorant guessing (to be clear, not on this thread). One of the great things about hobbies is that we get to decide how we do some things, and there is more than one way to get some things done that all work, so take your pick. Whatever you choose, you will probably be right. And if it does what you want it to, you ARE right. Now go out and dirty up some case necks.
