Brass Life - 284 Shehane & Lapua Brass

Looking to see what brass life you other 284 Shehane shooters get with necked up 6.5x284 Lapua brass.

I just ordered me some Wolf LR Standard Primers since they have been touted as being slightly larger and I should be able to get 2-4 more firings after 210Ms start getting a little loose in the pockets.

That said, I have been seeing about 6-8 full load firing with 1 fireform, so somewhere around 7-9 firings so far. I have a few that are probably one more firing away from being loose (hence, the Wolf LR primers).

I am shooting 180gr hybrids with H4831SC.

Is this about what you guys see?

Just keep shooting that shehane, I will keep winning brass for the straight .284. They should last about the same amount of firings...You still have to read wind either way!

It all depends on how hard you push it. When I chase 2900+ fps, I get 2 firings, but if I just cruise at the 2800+ fps area, I get 8-9 firings. I use Tula primers which I think are the same as Wolf, larger than U.S made primers.

Running at ~2940 from 32", I get roughly eight firings after initial fire forming. My fire forming load is mild and don't think it contributes.

We get 10-15 firings running at 2880-2920fps

Wow, that's a lot. Based on the brass I have now, it looks like up to 10 would be max.

My fireform loads are mild as well...accurate, but mild. 8 firings is about average I think I'll get without having to switch to a bigger Wolf primer. I was expecting initially, 10-12 firings when I decided on the cartridge. I just bought 200 peices of brass as safety stock ;)

This exact question has been on my mind. I bought a .284 Shehane last year with about 800 rounds down it. With this question being answered I will know how much brass I will need depending on how I run it.

I shoot basically the same with my Bat Shehane. Brass life seems to depend on how hard I push them. Neck clearance is important also with 4-7 thou. I also anneal after every round, 10-21 rounds with Lapua 6.5-284 gold box brass. I also jump the hybrids and lapuas with BR2 or fed 210s, depending on the powder, around 3000 fps.

I am using 6.5x284 blue box, with a 0.004" clearance, jumping 20K, with 210M. I can only see 8-9 firings and I am running about 2890-2895 fps.

I am running only a few feet faster than you BSUMOBA, and I am having trouble even getting to 8 firings. I can not wait til Shiraz gets those "hardened" .284 cases! That should solve some problems..

8 rounds, wow. Are you guys annealing? I have a 313 neck in my chamber so I turn mine down a lot inside and out. I don't think gold box is much better than blue box, at least not for my Dasher. I just got a really good deal on a case of them several years ago. Are you guys losing the primer pockets?

I anneal every time>>>It's the primer pockets that loosen up.. I have 3 loads>>one of them with H1000 powder and it keeps primer pockets pretty good. I have 2 loads, one with H4831SC and the other with IMR 7828>>>BOTH not even max for a "standard" .284 and I have a Shehane. Yet these "light loads" for a Shehane, loosen the primer pockets quickly.. I can run pressure well in excess of "load manual" max with S/R primed brass without any problems whatsoever. Even with "regular" brass, as in my .260A.I. I don't have any problems. BUT with those rebated 6.5 x 284 cases, they just don't last. I wonder if it is not the rebated rim that weakens the web area? I don't know.

I clean my primer pockets and flash holes every time. I am not sure what the annealing does for the primer pocket other than keeping things constant on the other end. I also square up the base/face when I first turn them...
