Brass/bullets shavings on Dillon 650??

I have a friend who asked me what is causing his brass/bullet shavings to drop all over his 650 shell plate. I remember having the same problem on my 1050 years ago but can’t remember what the fix was. Any ideas? He loading MG FMG-hp. He also is getting .005”variation on OAL....

Isolate the station where the shavings are being generated by loading only one case...

Are the cases being wet tumbled, this causes case mouth peening. This causes mouth edges to roll over and shear off during bullet seating.

Are these cases being properly deburred, if not brass can be sheared off inside and outside the case mouth.

I bought a sonic cleaner to prevent case mouth peening and stoped having brass shavings.

Lyman makes a type "M" expander and the copyright has expired and now Redding dies have the same type of expander. With jacketed bullets you only need to bump the case mouth onto step "B" below. This opens the case mouth to .001 or .002 larger than bullet diameter. The bullets can then be started into the case with just your fingers without any bullet tilting.

Below a Lyman .223 type "M" expander, many of these are used by reloaders with progressive presses. This ensures the bullet starts straight into the case without tilting and reduces bullet runout.

Brass shavings on the shellplate are probably coming from the crimp step: sharp edge on the case being rolled off as the case mouth is turned inwards. Any shaving that occurs from the expander should end up inside the case (though if it's caught between the expander, I suppose it could be pulled back out...)

Lead shaving can be from seating or crimping. I think seating is more likely (not enough throw on the crimp step to completely separate the shaving.)

Below the inside of a Lee crimp die, its a little rough and can grab the case mouth and "eat" the brass.

Below a close-up macro photo of a RCBS expander, no wonder so many people polish their expanders or remove them.

Seat crimp die problem?

Seat & crimp in separate operations.
Turn the seating stem down more then normal. No contact with the taper in the seat die. Taper crimp in the sepetate die.

The difference in OAL is because different trim length brass is putting different pressure on the bullet as its being seated.

Current RCBS expanders have the M step & are coated with something black . Dillon uses a funnel expander. Different.
