Bragging Rights in our sport

I was kind of disappointed to see the quote below on this forum, in response to my signature line. I did not respond in that thread, because it was off topic. My signature followed by the quote:

Lane
2006 U.S. Nationals F-Class TR - 4th place

“As much complaining as you are doing about it being a hobby and not fair because of bullet weights. You sure like throwing up your place at the Nationals.”

Damned right I am proud of my shooting. Compared to many, I have been shooting long-range for a relatively short amount of time (since 2005). It’s a lot of work to shoot a good match and earn a slot up near the top of the standings. It’s great to look at match results from all over and see friends and teammates at the top. It always brings a smile. That’s what it’s all about. That’s why we keep score and give out awards. This isn’t pee-wee league and we’re not there to take home a participation award.

Most are going to Raton to earn the right to get “chaired”. Not many get that opportunity, and I don’t know of anyone who has declined the ride. They have earned bragging rights and nobody we shoot with would ever question it. And when it is all done, we are always there to celebrate the winners.

Many of the people we shoot with have earned the Distinguished Rifleman badge, some of them many decades ago when the badges were actually made of gold. They still wear their pins proudly, as they rightly should. Any shooting accomplishment is something to remember fondly and to be proud of.

Any shooter looking for help would be well advised to seek assistance from someone with a respectable resume or who is often at the top of the match results. Either that or find a keyboard commando, with many posts, but not much range experience. We know that we can ALWAYS count on the top shooters around us, to help with any struggles that any of us may be having. One simply has to find the right person and ask.

Or, maybe I’m wrong, again...

Nuther 8,
Excuse the abbreviation of your handle but that looks better to me somehow. I also noticed the comment to your handle ( see you changed that) on that other thread. I thought it was a little harsh and uncalled for, but you do realize this is the internet. you stick it out there someone is going to say something about it or poke it with a stick. That's just the way this deal works.

You should be proud of that accomplishment, I damn sure would be, but were I choose to advertise a personal achievement would be completely different then you Choose Too. That's what makes a horse race or a rifle shooting match, one guy thinks his better than the other guy, or has a different opinion. Be a sad world if we all thought alike wouldn't it?

One other place I would have differed from you, I never ever would have changed that signature line, when you did that they kinda win, now don't they??

Then I guess it isn't really a hobby to you. Thanks for only copying my comment and not your whining about why they should limit bullet weights. Oh, now I get it, maybe that's why your fourth place was from 2006. And for the record. I have only been shooting rifles for 1 year. And this is my second life. It's not a hobby to me. But I still think they should leave the rules alone. ;) And yes I will be in Raton.

I usually don't get involved in such incivilities, but you've really torqued me with your personal comments. Lane has an opinion. Lane is more than welcome to have one, as are you. You are welcome to disagree, but calling an opinion whining is far below where we should be as a group.

Let me remind you of something:

But to be honest. It's people that attack other people for making a mistake on forums that usually keeps others from posting on forums for fear of making a mistake.

That was written by you. I respectfully request that you be gentle and keep the tone positive. We are all friends here.

Thank you,

My problem with the OP is that he claimed to be a hobbyist and an amateur at shooting. Saying that people that can afford to spend the time and money to develop loads using heavier bullets isn't fair to the amateurs that can't afford it and that's why they should limit bullet weights.

But then he added his signature to the mix. Yes I would be proud of that place, but you can't claim to be an amateur and then claim to be a champion for the pat's on the back! That totally goes against his statement of this being an amateur and shooting is a hobby to him and that's why they should limit bullet weights because it isn't fair.

His original comment.

But i for one oppose any such limit, i have spent nearly a year fine tuning my load and my rifle for the 210's.

This is EXACTLY why there should be a limit. The quote above put another way: "I spent a LOT of time and money to develop a competitive EQUIPMENT advantage in an amateur sport/hobby." For many, that is more appealing than becoming a better marksman and wind reader. And for others, that kind of financial commitment is not even an option. Again, in an AMATEUR sport/hobby.

And in lieu of a bullet weight cap, a cartridge overall length cap would be just as effective and EASY to enforce.

No offense to the OP, and others of the same mindset. Just my perspective...

Lane

Notice, no signature with this post.

My main point is you can't claim to be an amateur to prove a point, then claim to be a champion later.

Lane, as far as adding more rules to the fastest shooting sport, I disagree, but as far as bragging rights, I believe you have nothing to worry about.

Rocky, I think what pisses you off is that you say you take this sport very seriously, but the guy that claims looks at it like a hobby beat you by 36 points on your home range! :o I'm not saying it's right, but I totally understand! ;D

Money can't match the feeling of first place at Raton, especially at the Worlds!

It's big! Enough gas money to get you to either the Denver or Albuquerque airport, your choice!

Strikes me that Arizona F class is running with the big dogs when he should in fact be back home on the porch.

Did you ever see that one coming back to bite your ass ;D

From you, Nope. But I guess you will be in Raton. Right?

One thing about this sport, we are all amateurs. About the only pro's that I know of in the high power/long range game are the AMU, nobody else has a full ride sponsor kind of thing.

I actually had a conversation in the last couple of days with someone about shooting and the US Team. I made the comment that even if you are good enough to make the team it's still an amateur sport because while they may get some components from sponsors to support the shooting, they still have to be in a position to take lots of time off from work and travel to the events and still pay the mortgage. One of the comments Laura made when I was talking to her about South Africa was how good it was to be in a position with her employer that allowed her the time off. In fact it was one of her first comments.

Lane, I think your sig line was/is just fine.

You are right, to some extent. I am on a team with some of the AMU guys and shot with them in South Africa a couple of months ago. Yes, it is their job to shoot for the Army, but they spend a huge percentage of their time teaching others to shoot, both here and overseas. They are VERY good at competition shooting, but it isn't because that is all they do.

For the rest of us, it is simply a hobby and yes we are all amateurs. I have shot against the best shooters in the world. They all have full-time jobs to support their passion for this hobby. It's very expensive to travel and shoot, but that's the sacrifice that we choose to make. My wife, though supportive, would be quite happy to see me give it up. Not likely to happen any time soon. Have worked too hard to get to this point, made new friends all over the world, and love to compete against all of them.

Hey, Arizona_F_Class. I never claimed anything was not fair to the beginners in this sport. And for some reason you assumed that this was my first rodeo. My points were only in regard to cost containment, and not turning this into another sport where competitors try to buy higher scores with their equipment. Soon enough, it will be a problem in this sport. I don't support limits in this sport for my own self-interest. It's just clear from what I have seen in almost every other type of competition, things (primarily costs) spiral out of control. Then it becomes very difficult to reign them in and it makes it far more difficult to bring new people into the sport. And, I changed my signature line, just for you. ;)

Lane, I just got into this sport. I have been shooting for a year now. Matches for 6 months. This sport is very expensive. But if you want to be competitive. You have to spend the money. Period.

I didn't complain about spending the money. It was a choice I had to make if I want to get better. I had to adapt to this sport. Not have it change to better suit my needs.

P.S., I don't care about your signature line, only when you were whining about changing the rules.

Great, you spent the money! Many people won't and there are MANY of them that would participate if things were reasonable. I've been recruiting shooters for a lot of years. We shoot year round here and see a lot of different faces. It is extremely difficult to get them into the sport. We just had a long-range clinic (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=734058) in May. Have not seen any of the 45 participants since. Would love to get them all in the sport, but will welcome any we can get. Several quite successful shooters on this forum began shooting with us within the last few years. We do all we can to help them be successful, the same that was done for us. But they all had good attitudes. Would you help out someone with your same pissy attitude?

Apparently, you still don't understand the difference between "whining" and the discussion of a topic. You will learn a lot by listening to the many people on this forum who have years of experience and true rifleman skills. Or you can just keep mouthing off from the perspective of a newb. Maybe some day you will get it?!

You were the one that made a snide comment about a benign signature line, but I am still not sure why. That's why I did a new one, just for you. Did you click the links? If you look around, there are likely more out there. ;D Ok, now I'm just being an a$$. Sorry.
