BOSS Shooting system

Is anyone shooting a Winchester model 70 with the BOSS? I decided to pull my back out of the safe after 20 years & find the “sweet spot” for some 180-200 grain ammo & am having a hard time. It’s not consistent with the old literature.

Just wondering if anyone out there was using it & what ammo they were using & they had the “sweet spot” set on. My dad used to have one that was tuned in back in the 90’s & it would shoot a 3 shot group at 100 yards with all the holes touching

Thanks!

My guess, based on that as far as I know, the system never really caught on and is not offered on new rifles, so nobody discusses it much. Even when current, it was a low volume topic.

Back to the same old thing. You first tune a load to the rifle . Then use the Boss to possibly fine tune the load or have an easy method to keep it in tune.I had a M70 in 7 mag with a boss. It would shoot 3 shot groups at 200 yds all shots touching more often than not. If you want to throw a factory load in and start cranking on the Boss you might get lucky. Never tried that method,

To set up the BOSS it is ammo specific. As in ---one load/one setting. It controls loads by barrel harmonics.
The BOSS actually shortens/lengthens the barrel to do this.
If set for one make/load ammo, it might not shoot another Brand/load ammo as good!

It is not for the shooter who buys ammo because he likes the graphics on the box!

TOO much of a good thing for the average shooter/hunter by Browning/Winchester.

Back in the mid 1990’s my Brother in Law bought a beautiful Browning Auto in 270 Winchester, it had a BOSS.

I helped him tune it with Factory ammo, Remington I think, and we got it shooting 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 by tuning the BOSS.

That was pretty good for a BAR.

I sighted in a friends Brownining Abolt II in 30-06 and the Boss system works. Browning settings called for a #5 and ended up with 1" 100yd group, increased to about 5.25 and brought it down to under 1/2"
Think the ammo he bought was Winchester 180gr

Settings are down low on the page.

Had five of them and currently have three. Used two of them, a 7mm mag and a 338 win mag to take Georgia 7 and 9 pts this season. Last year I took two 8 pts with my 270 BOSS.

What is not to like? They are TUNER BRAKES. Go to any benchrest competition for long range and you will see mega numbers of tuner-brakes. The trade part reduces recoil. The tuner changes barrel harmonics to fine-tune a good load.

If you don't understand this then you need to read about tuners and brakes right here on Accurate Shooter. All three of my hunting versions are sub-MOA rifles. The BOSS system was an early tuner-brake option. It sure works. The problem is the masses of "unwashed" were not informed enough to know how to use them. Some even decried the brake part of it for muzzle blast, same as all the brakes offered today.

Just a few weeks ago I "nailed" a nice 9 pt with the 338 Win Mag at 270 yards and hit exactly where I expected. Never remember hearing the shot and felt little to no recoil. Excitement does that for shooters. I even use tuner-brakes on two of my AR15 target rifles for competition.

The BOSS System was came before education on brakes and tuners. it is WINderful.

I traded into the Winchester M70 Laredo in .300 Win Mag complete with the Boss System and a second blank 'tuner' without the brake holes.

I was just after the action but while at the range one day I gave it a whirl. I used my own 'match' ammunition without working up any additional modifications. No changes from the factory supplied Boss and I managed several targets under 3/4" for the day. Back in the shop I took it apart leaving the barrel together and built a fine magnum hunting rifle.
