What boring bar/holder is good to use for boring out a installed brake to proper diameter that will fit in a .224 pre-bored hole?
I have a really nice carbide shanked grizzly boring bar that fits in a .236 hole. You going .020 over the .224? The bar I mentioned will do it even though the bar is bigger than the hole. The bar will bore its own hole to fit itself. Nice thing with the grizzly, it's carbide shanked and rigid so it can stick out enough to bore entire brake.
That's it...its a nice tool. Pricy, but nice quality
Can you grind a piece of HS tool steel to do the job?
Figure a brake is 2 to 3 inches long. If you started with a 1/4" bit, it may not take too long. For a small hole such as the OP wants, a lot of clearance is needed too. HSS hanging out there for that distance, that thin, I'll go with the solid carbide setup. YMMV.Depends on how deep you need to cut.
This is the best way. It makes it more effective with a chamber inside then a spot like 1/4 long bored to your preferred size over bullet diaSome drill it out from the back side, and bore just the front.

I just use a correct size chucking reamer....
