Boresnake?

Do any of you use a bore-snake? I was wondering if it is a high quality way to clean your barrels? It sure does seem like it would be convenient.

Why would you want to drag the same crap,deposited on the 'patch' portion) through your barrel again and again? Maybe for a chrome-lined mil-surp barrel, or in an emergency on a hunting trip,maybe). But other than that... NO!!!

I carry one along when out hunting just in case I get some debris in my barrel. This past coyote calling season, I took a newbie out calling. He did not have a suitable coyote rifle, so I let him use my Lilja barreled .17 Remington and my homemade shooting sticks. On one of the stands he was sitting with the forearm of the rifle in the crotch of the shooting sticks and had the butt of the rifle sitting on the ground and WAS NOT holding onto the rifle or the sticks. I was too far away to communicate with him without hollering at him, so I kept quiet and continued to call. Needless to say, the sticks tipped over and the muzzle of the barrel dipped down into the snow. He picked the rifle up and got back into position. I called off the stand right then and there. I DID NOT want a coyote coming in on his side and then have him shoot with snow or drops of water in the barrel.

When I walked over to where he was sitting, I asked him if any snow got in the barrel when the rifle fell off the sticks. He looked a little sheepish and assured me no snow had gotten in the barrel. Well, I took a look into the muzzle and could see bits of snow and small pieces of grass inside the muzzle. I took my Bore-Snake out of my back pack, removed the bolt from the rifle and dropped the little weight down into the barrel from the chamber out the end of the barrel while the newbie held the rifle up off the ground. I pulled the Bore-Snake through and that cleaned out the snow, water, and whatever else had been in the muzzle end of the barrel.

That is about the only thing I will use the Bore-Snake for. IMHO, it certainly isn't something I'd use to try to get my barrels cleaned of powder, carbon, or copper fouling. They are handy for the instance I described above.

I always put a piece of masking tape over the muzzle when hunting... it does not affect the point of impact at all and keeps all the debris, snow, rain, dust, whatever out of the barrel... and a simple look at it will confirm it...

I use them all the time and keep one in each gun case and have them also in my workshop. Took all the brushes out of mine so it's mainly to pull thru right after shooting OR to pull thru between relays. I also toss them in the washer and wash them. Looks like I have 4 for 308 Win, 2 in 22LR, and 4 in 45 ACP.

As far as "Pulling all that crud" back thru the barrel. How many of you push your rod all the way through OR Clean the rod as you pull it back ?

Last but not least and not meaning to hijack thread ... Has anyone ever rinsed a barrel with solvent and/or rinsed the brushes to SEE just what was in the barrel ? Ever let the solvent evaporate ? Can anyone tell me the composition of so called "Grit"?

I don't just use Boresnakes but I also use Carbon fiber rods and coated rods. The only brushes I use now are the Iosso blue nylon brushes.
