Borescopes

I have been looking at the hawkeye borescopes and other models within reason and was Just wanting to get some feed back on brands and models that seem to work well.

I, too, have a Hawkeye but not long ago there was some talk about a video only unit with a flexible tube (fiber optic I assume) that sold for about $300. Did not pursue it as I did not need one but I would use the forum search engine and find the name of the outfit that had them. Looked promising.

Love my Bruno's bought Hawkeye without the angled eyepiece. Around $700+ as I recall. No more guessing. Now I know.

I use the straight Hawkeye at work and it's great. If I was to buy my own I would ge the same model with angled eye piece.

My Hawkeye is worth every penny to me. I have thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the wealth of info it has provided me on bores, chambers, throat areas, crowns, and cleaning. I've had mine for over 8 years, and still use it often. I would definitely purchase one again. I have the adjustable eyepiece focus feature, which is a plus. Your eyes change over the years, and having the focus feature is a bonus. Just imagine your rifle scope without a focus feature.

The right angle attachment is nice. But, if you have a lot of rifles with a high comb on stock, then you're not going to be able to use it. Because it is quite large in diameter where it attaches to the unit and you need additional clearance under the scope and above the top of stock to use it. Another nice feature with Hawkeye is to remove the angled-mirror tube to use the center optic tube for .172 caliber barrels, since the center tube is .168" in diameter. It will only provide a straight-on view, but it's still a revealing image.

Thanks for all the replies. I figures the hawkeye was of quality and seems everyone is happy with it. I do believe Bruno's is still the best price from what I have seen and the angle eye piece seems to be favored. Thanks Bill just what in needed to know.

Here is another option...for less money..something to consider.. :)

My Hawkeye has saved me more than the cost of the scope, over 6 years.
Some barrels need a patch to clean some need more.
The point is I have saved time, cleaning supplies and barrels.
Good Shooting.

Has anyone out there used this $225 borescope and can give us some feedback on it?

Last December I was looking for a gunsmith with a borescope. I found one, unfortunately, he dropped his Hawkeye and broke the glass rod and had to send it to New York for a $600 repair.

I looked around and discovered digital borescopes and bought one like this one http://www.amazon.com/Removeable-Megapixels-interface-Inspection-Borescope/dp/B00FALVTRM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1402868854&sr=8-6&keywords=5.5mm+digital+borescope

Mine has a 5.5mm tip so I can use to look down the bore of anything from .22 on up.

It works like a charm, and I don't have to worry about breaking a fragile glass rod. Mine came with a 3 foot and 10 foot cable and side mirrors. I tried the side mirror but it's really quite worth less. Looking straight ahead is really all that you need.

Now I use it for all kinds of little chores. A couple months ago the kitchen sink was draining very slowly, the 10' cable came in handy, found one of my wife's measuring spoons down the drain and I was able to get out.

Stay away from borescopes!!

They are evil and will make you want to toss a perfectly good shooting barrel!!

They are the result of a secret conspiracy among barrel makers.

I think of borescopes like a sprinkler system in Houston, once you got one you wouldn't want to do without it.

Yes It works , I responded to a few inquires of this scope , as I have both. It does get a lot of use at the range or gunshow , but is not as good as the hawkeye . Its also not $700 and fragile.
Glad its working for you , it is a good deal for $240 . Did your come with the 90 degree mirror ?
Gary

Hi Gary,
Yes, mine came with a 90 degree mirror. I used once and put it away, it seemed really quite useless to me. I didn't know what to use it for.

I've never used an Hawkeye so I can't compare, but the fact that a fiberoptic isn't fragile seemed like a big advantage to me. I can be a bit clumsy sometimes. My wife keeps the good crystal and china stuff away from me.

I'm sure in five years digital borescope will be as good as an Hawkeye and cost $100. So keep using yours as long as you can.

Kindest regards,
Joe

Thanks again for all the replies. Got the angle eyepiece hawkeye coming. Kinda hard to swallow that initial cost but I'm sure it will be one of the most used tools I have. Might even save some barrel life from overcleaning and know what to chase,
