.........Ha, we could really create a long thread on the best way to clean a barrel........

This will make a lot of "experts" mad, but.....it wouldn't be long at all if you kicked off all the posters that swear by some bore cleaner.......but don't own a borescope!!!!! Not knocking anyone's method or any product, I could care less how anyone does it or what they use, I also understand that a $1000 plus scope might not be in everyone's budget, but it is disturbing when they get on a public forum and make these claims with no way to verify.
I have said it before, when some expert starts blasting off about how great and fast and effortless his X42-3 Bore Cleaner works I usually ask, "So, what kind of borescope do you have??"....end of conversation. I mean, would they also tell me how many ounces their trigger is set to without a scale??? How do they weigh powder charges???

Maybe ignorance is bliss. I don't have a bore scope. For many many years I used Shooter's Choice bore cleaner for my center fire rifles and I was completely happy with it from the standpoint my rifles maintained their accuracy so I assumed it was working satisfactorily. I routinely clean after every 30 rounds and I use a bronze brush, and rod guide.

The only reason I switched to Bore Tech was that my wife developed a sensitivity to the ammonia smell in Shooter's Choice which was especially problematic due to our forced air cooling an heating system. So I tried Bore Tech carbon and copper removers and I was impressed with the lack of odor, the amount of carbon removed as evidenced by the dark black patches and the amount of copper removed as evidenced by the blue coloration on the patches.

Not being an "expert", I'm not sure if it's necessary to clean the bore to the point of meeting the visually criteria of a bore scope. Maybe it is but if my rifles are maintaining accuracy I don't care as long as my performance standards are being met. In fairness, my standards are not as stringent as a bench rest competitor. Is Bore Tech the best? I don't know but it's amusing that after over a hundred years of modern center fire ammunition use and with the relatively recent development of bore scopes that no one, not even the "experts", has the definitive answer on cleaning.

i use the boretech products. i also use losso paste.

that said like most things in shooting whatever works for you.

even the experts can't agree on how to clean a barrel.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good camera view of your chamber or barrel. A $20 endoscope camera will suffice, and you can find them small enough to fit down a .22 barrel. I have one that bluetooths to my laptop and will take still pics. I think it was $39.00

You can easily see copper build up, throat erosion, carbon ring, chamber condition etc. All the issues that effect performance and accuracy without the scary price. And it will definitely reveal what your cleaning process is capable of and more importantly what it is not.

I stoped using bronse brushes a couple years ago and only used nylon brushes because we all know a bronzebrush is the devils tool, not going to town on a barrel with a nylon brush just some lite work. Life was good and every 100 shots or so I would do the iosso thing and carry on. 50 shots or so ago on my one barrel I measured my lands and was surprised that this 6mm rifle isnt even moving the lands, shot my last match for the year with some weerd results and stuck a borescope down the barrel after giving it a good clean. What do you know my lands actually moved a bit in the last 100+ shots but I had another black ring of sh$t sitting there rite where the lands start and was actually measuring my lands of that.Bought a nice selection of bronze brushes and no amount of reading on the internet will ever confince me again that a bronze brush is bad for a barrel

The Dewey "no harm" bronze brushes used with a quality rod guide minimizes the chance of any bore damage. I may be wrong but I always believed that the mechanical action in using a bronze brush properly minimizes the chances of a carbon ring forming.

I suspect that would be dependent on how far into the freebore your bore guide runs. Assuming you use one, of course.

Wouldnt do much good at cleaning the throat if it went into it!
