Bore guide

I have heard about the Lucas bore guides, but have never seen one. Can anyone explain to me why they are better than the white Delrin ones Sinclair makes? Am I hurting my Krieger and Rock Creek barrels by using the Delrin type? Thanks!

The Sinclair Delrin guides aren't bad, but they let your cleaning rod bow more than is desireable. The Lucas guides have a insert in the rear that provides a tighter clearance on the rod, keeping it centered in the bore.

FWIW, some top BR smiths feel that even the Lucas is a bit on the generous side, and they've crafted cust bore guides with very minimal clearance.

On this page you'll find pictures of the Lucas guide, along with a product review:

The Lucas is made from the same material BTW, just in black. I've never used a Lucas, so I don't know what the fit to the rod is, but I have made my own. With the right reamers for the rear insert, I have less than .005" total clearance for both my small and large Dewey rods. You can really see how straight the rods travel down the bore when cleaning.

But the Lucas is a little more expensive and it is caliber & action specific. I have often wondered whether it matters all that much if a coated rod bends a little and rubs the lands. I doubt it harms them.

Being caliber and rod specific is one of the benefits of the Lucas guide, and that's why they work so good.
If you rub anything often enough it will wear away to a point.......

I like the Lucas guide, that's what I use. Another issue is rod diameter, that's one of the reasons I prefer Bore Tech rods which are more caliber specific. This really comes into play in the longer lengths needed for 28inch + barrels with bore guides and solvent ports and high combed stocks where you need a 54 inch or more rod. Those 22 caliber rods become awfully "whippy" at those lengths.
