Bore cleaning suggestions and best bore cleaner fluid

JB Bore Cleaner if it is really puked up. Shooters Choice for regular cleaning. Best possible advice is buy a borescope so you know when it needs to be cleaned and more importantly when it is clean. Many barrels that are thought to be clean are absolutely not, and without that scope you are guessing at best.

Some of you motorcycle guys, pick up a can of PJ1 Contact Cleaner aerosol at your local shop. It is awesome on carbon and easy on most finishes. I use it in my bores and to clean cases. (not to mention triggers, bolt cleaning, etc) Just my two cents.

Oh come on cliffe, if we all used the search function this site would be mostly buy and sell adds. Lets live a little and indulge the technical questions that come up, whether they have come up before or not.

Sincerely,
LE Hanson

HAHA good one!

I dare say i'm not a anal scrubber, my 308 Win has 600 rounds down it and still bug holes, my 260 will not group at all after 150 rounds, I scrub it with Bore Tech c4 then attack what little copper with Wipe Out, the best advice ever was buy a borescope, without one your just guessing if your clean, need to be clean, or if your cleaning routine is working.

I would like to see responses from those who own a Borescope and have tried various methods. I think those are the guys who actually know the effectiveness of various cleaners.

Best tool I ever bought was my Hawkeye borescope, without one you are guessing if your barrel is clean or not, I was guilty of overcleaning for years before I bought my Hawkeye, and one can also not clean enough. I find myself using the borescope everytime I clean and my cleaning time has been cut in half. After playing with probably most every cleaning brew on the market, I went back to old reliable which is Butches Bore Shine for 80% of my cleaning duties followed with a wet patch of Kroil before putting rifle away. I do have JB compound on standby if ever needed and it will not harm your barrel IMHO, i also have Bore-Tech Eliminator and Barnes CR-10 copper remover, and I gave everything else away that I found not to work as advertised. Member FDshuster here on the board has had a Hawkeye waay longer than I and he will probably chime in when he sees this thread. He has tried all of the solvents.

Butches or Montana has been really good for me.been able to catch Butches from time to time on sale from Midway.the 16oz bottel for less than $20 is a deal.and it works and last a long time for the amount I shoot.

I do not have a borescope.but I do love to use a q-tip for checking the bore with.just put one in the end of the bore and in great sun light it shows alot.just move the q-tip around to see all of the bore as fare as you can see down the bore.

Looking for best beak in procedure and regular cleaning tips including the best cleaners to use.

Here's the procedure: http://benchrest.netfirms.com/Barrel%20Break-In.htm

Here's the cleaners: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=440524

The Best Break-IN: Clean the barrel. Shoot 10 times. Let the Barrel Cool. Shoot 10 Times. Clean the Barrel. You're Done. So says the Legend, Tony Boyer. [That's his method]

Now go have fun! You break the barrel in by shooting it, not by cleaning it.

I don't have a borescope but I use montana extreme for removing the copper and brake clean for carbon removal. I have gotten a lot more junk out of a bore after its already seemed to be clean from other solvents. I only use nylon brushes with the montana extreme otherwise it will give a false indication of copper in the bore from contact with a brass or bronze brush. I only leave the solvent in the bore for 10-15 min max and the break clean if not compleatly removed with a dry patch only takes a couple seconds to evaporate away. I then run a wet patch of rem oil to prevent any type of corrosion.
