Borden vs. Stiller

I am going to build an f-class/600 yard benchrest rifle. What are the pros/cons of the Stiller P1000 and the Borden BRM dual port? I am set on a dual port and want an action long enough to be able to use a .243 in the future.

I compared a borden and a stiller side by side when I was specifying my rifle and for what its worth ended up choosing the Stiller. What I didn't like about the borden was the way it uses pressure from the bolt handle base on the rear of the action for primary extraction of the case. I am sure someone with more knowledge of the design will be able to explain better and it may be that the lug recesses are shaped to compensate, but it 'appears' as though the bolt is already being forced rearwards before the lugs have released adequately and I was advised that this was a source of excessive wear.

Dont they all use this use this for primary extraction? If the extraction cam was engaging before the lugs were disengaged the bolt would lock up? If it was an unaltered borden action with a trigger installed by Jim,chances are that what you were feeling was proper timing.

If there is somone in the US that can time an action it is Jim Borden....what you were feeling felt weird because you prolly never felt an acton that well desighned....I shoot a Panda F class.....dont buy anthing till you shoot one of them...Roger

Jaba, I’d suggest you not use any loading data from whoever “advised” you on that one. The condition you describe would make it mechanically impossible to close the bolt let alone open it.

I think you are all correct. On reflection, I think it was probably that I was being dissuaded from using a target action like BAT or Borden as the rifle that this chap is building for me is a hunting rifle. Ultimately we were choosing between the TAC and Predator and I went with the Predator.
Back to the question of F-Class actions, I wouldn't rule out the Barnard though...

I can tell you first hand that Jim Borden is a true craftsman, as is jerry stiller. If i were going to build a prairie dog type rifle then the p-1000 would be my choice, if i were going to build a rifle for real accuracy it would be dam hard to beat anything Jim Borden makes. He takes a lot of extra care into the detail of his actions. I can guarantee if you buy a borden it wont have any firing pin drag or any of the other issues that cause ignition problems that most riflemen dont even think about. It matters, and in fact it matters a great deal. My nex action will be a Borden for sure. I just cant come up with any excesses to build another as i have everything i could ever really want already. I will find and excuse though. LOL!!!! give jim a call!! Lee
