Borden Drop Port Question.

Does any body have a description of how the Borden Drop Port configuration works. I really can’t tell by the few pictures on line.

I am wanting to convert my 30 BR VFS Rifle to a drop port over the winter,. I did my 6PPC LV Farley with a Sako Extractor several years ago, it works great. I am curious about the Borden System.

How is tension held down on the extractor so it will snap over the case rim?
I haven't taken the extractor apart, but it is a spring that keeps tension; I imagine probably a leaf given the packaging constraints. The assembly is all in a bore in the rim that does not break through to the outside of the bolt - all contained. When I have the gun out again I'll snap a couple pictures for you.

The extractor is long with a skinney middle - which is bent just enough to capure the case - it is held in place with a roll pin at the bottom. Then extractor is 1 to 1 1/2 inch long.

Just please dont do a drop port with a sako or m16 extractor and a left load port. Theres a reason stiller used a remington extractor on his original design. Copies without knowing why he did that are very dangerous. Knowing some of the farleys you have i know you remember the guy getting killed by the extractor to the forehead around the sheared lug time.

Dusty, I did do a Sako, and yes, it does have a clear path out through the bolt raceway When the bolt is closed.
I have never blown a case with a 6PPC.
i have first hand knowledge of one shooter getting injured with a Sako Extractor in a Remington 700.
it was at the old Lake Houston Gun Club. A shooter had a 243 Ackley Improved in a Remington 700 that had a Sako conversion.
He was shooting light 68 grn match bullets at about 3800 FPS with a full case of 4350. He decided to try some 105 grn bullets. He forgot to change his powder measure. He literally welded the case head into the Remington bolt’s counterbore. It blew the extractor out of the bolt and it ended up in his head.
It did not kill him, but messed him up pretty bad.
The deal with the Farley lugg failures was due to Jim missing the temper on his bolts, which were made from S-7 tool steel. He had a recall.
Two other shooters and I took all of ours over to Lone Star Heat Treating and had the Rockwell hardness tested. They were all over the place, from 42 RC to 53RC. The 53 RC bolt was out of my favorite LV. I never sent it back, and thousands of rounds later, it is still going strong.

I checked mine and i had one at 40rc. Jim gave me a new bolt and quite a few bolt bodies

Jackie, Sorry the photos are a little blurry. Hope they may help a little. I have two BRM drop ports and really love them, cases drop straight down onto a small terry cloth towel, don't have to worry about them rolling off the bench onto the concrete and getting dinged up. Also helped me increase my speed, I shoot 1000 yds. at Williamsport. Been shooting them 2 seasons and have never had one not extract, also like the idea of not having any side pressure on the case while in the chamber. If you use the wheeler method of finding your touch point, no ejector to remove. If I ever figure out how to post a video, I would extract a couple to let you see how it functions. Hope this may help a little.
