Books

What books can you recommend to a new guy?... Along the lines of anecdotal evidence as opposed to advanced ballistics. (baby steps)
Thanks

The lyman manual has a lot of good reading and the hornady reloading manual has some good guide lines and above all safety first and no internet loads till you know how to prove them out.

I really need to think before I type, lol.
I was hoping more along the lines of Litz, Boyer, etc... I have lots of idle time and was hoping to improve my knowledge base of marksmanship in general.
I do agree with both of your suggestions though.

For short range benchrest-type shooting, I'd recommend (in descending order):

Boyer
Ratigan
Newick

There's a lot of great info on match strategy in addition to the expected stuff on rifles, ammo, and wind doping. Virtually exclusively limited to 6PPC, though. Not surprising, given the dominance of the 6PPC in the game.

Warren Page's "The Accurate Rifle" is still relevant and has a lot of interesting history. Out of print now, I think.

I've never found any good books on benchrest score shooting or long-range benchrest, so if you come across anything, let me know.

I liked the Tony Boyer book very much as he hints at tricks he does.

Don't hesitate to try to find some back issues of Precision Shooting. Good reading, good info, and not as dry as some ballistic related hardcovers.

Two books by David Tubb: "Rifle Shooter" and "High Power Rifle"

"The Wind Book for Rifle Shooters" by Linda K. Miller

One of my all time favorites "ABC's of reloading" an any of Glen Zedickers books, Making the target bigger is a pretty good one.
Kind of helps when the author rights it for the everyday reloader.
The list can go on an on but a few of the above mentioned are pretty good as well

Eric -

P.O. Ackley's work:

" Handbook for Shooters & Reloaders Vol 1 & 2 " 1962

Homer Powley:

" The Powley Papers " Guns & Ammo Annual 1974

As always, thanks for helping the new guys out. Very much appreciated!
I have ordered a few and am especially interested in the ''wind book for rifle shooters''... Now I know why most answers are prefaced by '' do you have flags?''.
Merry Christmas to you and yours,
Eric

I am really glad I bought Tony Boyer's book. I only wish he was a LR benchrest guy... lots of the stuff in the book is for SR benchrest. Still a terrific resource though, well-written, nicely illustrated, heavy paper. A real gem!

May or may not be what you want, but you can still find used copies, albeit rather pricey, "The Benchrest Shooting Primer", is a collection of Precision Shooting magazine articles. Good luck on your endeavor.

I have to agree with reading Boyer's book, as well as Ratigan's. After I read them, alot of the comments, here, started to make more sense to me. I go back through old threads, when I have the time. Lot's of good info stored here.

What you glean from a book makes a big difference in reading. It's easy to get misled when a author gets on a topic that they don't completely understand but include just to complete their book. I try to focus on their strong subjects and not let myself fall into their quagmires. I refer to it as pulling the weeds from a book.
