Bolt to raceway clearance, Kauger actions

I do not think anybody is entitled to do things exactly as they wish.

Doing things exactly as you wish might satisfy the individual need to know, but not the third party.

That third party is who pays the bills.

I made this gizmo to check shroud movement. By moving it forward, a rough idea of bolt body movement in the receiver is possible.

Checking the the receiver I.D. with a radiused telescoping gauge, it's always different than what the gizmo shows me. ;) Even for a non-machinist, hacker-type like myself, decent technique with the telescoping tool will give consistent measurements of the receiver I.D.

I use an antique C micrometer to measure the bolt diameter and a pin gauge to measure the receiver ID. My pin gauges are only in .0005” increments but that’s close enough for a cave man like me.

So I just realized my calipers don't go to .00005. I just have a $50 origin cal. So not a great way to measure I'd imagine.

.704 gauge goes in.
.705 will not start.

Bolt measures .701.
Wish it were a little tighter.

Oh well, way she goes, going to have a 6br chamber for this one.

Thanks for all the help fellas!

Kevin, here’s the first 3-shot group my BIL shot with his 6BRA. His action is a Kauger CRS2. I chambered for it, a Krieger HV 1:7.5 with the Wheeler #2 .268 neck. I don’t have measurements on his bolt/raceway clearance but it feels very much like mine. I hope your’s shoots small like his does.

I will repeat what I stated in post #27…”It’s Perfect” ! :)

Thanks! I have no doubts it will. I have kauger briis, one of which is a 30 BR, and it shoots like a 30BR. Looking forward to getting this one ready to shoot!

Kevin, are you measuring the bolt with a calipers or a micrometer? -Al

Alright, MICROMETER in hand.

Action #1
.704 pin slides in. .705 pin will not start
Bolt measures .7014

Action #2 30BR bought 2 years ago
.704 pin slides in. .705 pin won't start
Bolt measures .7006

I'm generally not this stupid. Its just unfortunate that I don't have anyone in my life that even really shoots other than the guys that bring their savages out once per year, make sure they can hit a pie plate, hunt and then don't touch them again until next season. Two clubs I shoot at are not full of social butterflies either, haha. I'd love to have a mentor in person who could teach me these types of things so I can learn. That said I'm very fortunate to have this forum, and everyone who has helped me over the years.

Thanks fellas, much appreciated!
