Bolt hard to open intermittently on 6.5 x 47

Shaggy
Not trying to start an argument but I disagree in lapping a bolt like you described. Maybe others can tell us their method but I don't think lapping lugs like you stated creates true contact with both lugs and can create headspace issues quickly.

How do your primers look? Cratering can cause very hard bolt lift. You may just need your firing pin bushed. Simple job that you can send your bolt out for. --Jerry

First thing I would do is check your camming action. On the sticky cases - do you see very much of the angled surface of the bolt handle hitting the small angled surface on the action? If the handle was silver soldered on - I would bet there's very little cam there....ie too much space between. If it's a one piece bolt - I agree that it's likely loads/pressure/cratering are the issue.

I read all the responses and did noth read anything about loads. Just because one barrel shoots a load fine doesn't mean another will. It can be the same barrel brand, twist and length done with the same reamer. As an example I had a 6 Dasher 8 twist Krieger that I could only shoot 32 grains of Varget max. Others I could shoot 33 plus grains.

Another thing is you may not be sizing the back end of the case enough. This is a problem with the 6.5x47 and others. It could be close but not quite enough. One thing is the one chamber of not dialed in could be a hair bigger in the back end and would let you get away with a little less sizing.

I never mix brass from one gun to another. Even though done with the same reamer they are not exactly the same. Matt

ASSUMING its not pressure. Check lug contact. I have seen a lot of truing setups that I'd bet money made actions worse that they were from the factory. If you only have one lug seated, pressure will seat the other lug by bending the bolt and or receiver. When this happens you will get heavy lift because your bolts in a bind. I do not recommend lapping, it will put a taper in the lugs and seats. Always. Galling can be an issue but that should cause heavy lift every time. Also, check the bolt, an out of square boltface can cause heavier lift as well. Dont assume its ok just because its a PTG.
