Bolt face

After shooting to day , I was looking at my Savage bolt and I see what looks to me like it is tuching the end of the barrel. The gun shoots pretty good but I'll bet it would shoot better if it didn't tuch . What do you think ? I would fix it but I give my kids my lathe and they are 500 miles away . And on this gun I did away with the barrel nut and I think I need about .003 removed from the barrel.

Shooting that well it’s probably not touching. More than likely it touches when the chamber is empty and that’s where there the scratches are coming from. Take the firing pin assembly out and see if there is any linear movement with bolt closed. If there is there’s clearance.

Dykum or a black magic marker will confirm. If its touching you wont need your lathe. Some 220 and 400-600 sandpaper on a hard flat surface with a little well placed finger grease and take a cpl thousandth off the face of the bolt... slowly.

As above it is possible it wont touch with a chambered round.

If the bolt face is touching, I would question headspace also, It's possible that when headspacing, As this is a savage, The barrel was turned in until resistance was felt on a headspace gauge, Or so it was thought, It could have been the bolt face? Just thinking out loud.

No with this barrel I fit the barrel with out the nut . I did use a black marker and with a round in the chamber there is no marks on the bolt face even after firing it . So I guess it is ok . I have shot about 500 rounds with this barrel . Better just leave it alown .
Thanks everyone for your imput .

I saw your other thread on this rifle, It shoots very, very good, So as other's have said, If it broke don't fix it!

Any easy way to tell for sure: take a piece of small diameter solder and stick it on the bolt face with a dab of grease. Carefully close the bolt. Open and remove the bolt. Measure how thick the solder is. No more guessing. :)
