Bolt Face

I have a Douglas XX SS .308 Barrel 22" long 1-10 twist. I would like to rechamber it to 30BR Have it cut down to 17" and to fit my 12 Target action Large Shank that has been made into a pistol. What bolt face caliber would I need to do this? I would like to get a bolt face I already have to save a buck or two. I assume It will do better in a short action whether Rem or Savage? Can a bolt face be changed on a savage to work? Thanks lou

If you are going to 30BR you need a 1:17 or 1:18 barrel if you are going to shoot it in BR Competition. The 1:10 twist is to fast.

Nat,
Looks like he has converted this into a pistol so I don't know that he is looking for competition. What bullets could he shoot if he did re-chambered the 1/10 twist?

Gentleman I really have been on a fishing expidition as to the caliber. I guess I should have asked what would be a good choice to re-chamber this barrel too? I have a 30BR shillen barrel on the action now. Really put my mouth in gear before my brain My Bad. Maybe it's all the drugs recouperating from back surgery 2 weeks a go. Ok lets start over in your opinion what would be a great caliber to re-chamber this barrel too with the 1-10 twist? .308. 30-06, 300 RSAUM. I have numerous hunting pistols so I really am looking to do something with this barrel rather than let it sit in the safe. The person I got the barrel from had a brake put on it and was going to rechamber it to what? Barrel has plenty room to rechamber and some to spare. Relly wwould appreciate any ssuggestions as to what you think Thanks Lou

I don't think it's legal to change a rifle to a pistol, something to check on.

It is legal to build a handgun from a rifle ...But a minimum length is required for the barrel and a minimum overall length...Two lengths to be met...I had several built years ago but am unsure of the number for either....LT

It is 16" minimum on the barrel and 26" overall and it would be much better to call it a rifle with a pistol grip stock, semantics I know, but it is not legal to build a pistol from a rifle, but it is legal to shorten a rifle to these minimum lengths and use a pistol grip stock on it.

Since you already load for the 30 br, why not do the same, but shoot the bigger bullets. I bet the 150's will fill the bill and the load data is already in the Serria book.

I bought it off the sight w/o much thought to whether it's a pistol or rifle? Had it registered by my FFL and he never mentioned the laws pertaining to it. I do know it has a target undesignated model 12 target action 17" barrel w rear grip stock.

I went all through this subject with Encores and Contenders. Being a retired cop I have never seen any hold ups where the perp used a single shot of the afore mentioned weapons. Well now am thinking all over again. I really enjoy hunting more with a pistol made from the afore mentioned components than a rifle. Well back to the drawaing board Lou

mr. 77 you already have a gun that is registered as a pistol just as the x-p100 rem , as far as the .473 bolt face that you already have, it will have to be changed to .535 face to properly fit the 30 rem short ultra mag. The 1 - 10 twist barrel you own should work just fine if your pistol is a single shot but if you have a repeater, a boat load of work is ahead you------good luck & take care--------------craig
