What is a accepteble distance from the end of the barrel to the outside face of the bolt?

Most gunsmiths want about .005".

What is the largest distance and still maintain safety. I have a 223 that is .022 but it has no pressure signs.

The distance from the bolt face to the barrel has nothing to do with pressure, but could have lots of headspace problems if it's not right.
.005-.010 on a benchrest rifle is pretty normal but may screw up a field rifle if it gets any debris in it at all.

If the gap between the bolt and the breech is too large, the case may be "belted" due to not being supported by the chamber.
