Body die first?

Why don't you go back and read the link I posted earlier and see how much shoulder bump Mr. Salazar prefers instead of guessing. In fact everyone should read the Rifleman’s journal and more from his index of articles.

What the late Mr. Hull of Sierra's testing lab and world-class long range shooter was saying in his humorous way about the rat turd in the violin case was simple...............................
he did not neck size his cases and full length resized all his ammunition with minimum shoulder bump.

There is a simple answer to the OP. Buy a concentriciy gauge, try it both ways (body die first, body die second) measure the results. ................ Buy the gauge. Believe what it tells you. Your equipment may give different results than mine did.

^^^^^^This.

Man i didn't this would turn to a heated debate. I am going to try both ways and see what works best for me. This is just a standerd Sammi chamber in 243 shilen barrel.

No kidding. :D

But I wasn't surprised. This two step sizing has lots to offer and opinions and input here reflect that. I know after hearing from Boyd a few months back, I bought a Lee collett and Redding body die for my Barnes Precision AR15 with 20" Krieger.

Runout on my 21 st Century gauge was a fraction of what it was using my Redding deluxe 3 die set. Also bought Forster Ultra seater and look forward to seeing if that further improves things. Having shot a 0.172" with this gun, I'm a believer. To say the least.

As for chicken or egg, just test both ways as Boyd suggest. For my application, I'm neck sizing first.

heated debate.

there is no debate, there is a question. What receiver are you using?

Nudduck, back to you, again, this is not a debate, this is an example of social dysfunction on the Internet.

You have a Remington 700, to determine the effect the receiver design had on the case setting in the chamber I would need to know that. As you are aware there are controlled feed, there are push feed receivers, and there is more than one control feed designed receivers.

If he did not neck size his cases he should have said he did not neck size his cases. If he full length sized his cases he should have given the length of the chamber from the datum to the bolt face in thousandths and he should have listed the length of the case in thousandths from the shoulder/datum to the head of the case.

I am the fan of cutting down on all that case travel.

Finely, I found something that guffy said, that I can agree with!

When a case "travels"...

.... it stretches.

And we all know where that leads us. Down the path to head separations :( :( :(

There it is. Try it yourself and see what works for you. Until you quantify something yourself in your own mind with your own experience you will not be satisfied with info simply regurgitated from another post, blog or article. There is a lot of good info here, unfortunately there is a lot of "marginal" info and people that will try and shove it down your throat.

CatShooter you (expletive deleted) rat bastard, Jim Hull said violin case and not a Trombone case.
(I should have known case greasers play both sides of the street) >:(

Short Headspace on New Brass
by Germán A. Salazar

"I prefer to set the die for an average of 0.0015" to 0.002" setback on a .308 and allow that 0.001" total variance. That keeps headspace variance a lot tighter. The reason to keep headpsace short and consistent is simply to maximize case life. The more we set the shoulder back, the sooner the case will separate at the base."

It helps to keep things in perspective ;)

Well Golly, without all the facts not in, it is very hard to make a concise conclusion by anyone! However Boyd Allen seemed to hit the nail on the head when he said try both and make up your own minds! Things can't get much planer then that!

By the way does anyone have a great set of measurements for a Rat Turd, I just can't seem to find it in my Nosler manual. 8) ;D Sorry guys, I just couldn’t help it!
