Blueprinting V/S Square & Lap REM 700 Action

I am about to rebarrel a REM 700 action, I will be shooting long range varmints with it.

Is it worth blueprinting the action, or should I have the action face squared and the lugs lapped?

What year is the action, and how far is "long"?

What kind of varmint are you shooting?

IMO there is only one way to true an action, the way the ends up with flat, square lugs seats and action face perpendicular to the bore, threads without taper, concentric to the bore, bolt lugs and face square/flat and perpendicular to the body. Anything other than that is not truing and is not money well spent IMO. This is not accomplished with hand tools and/or lapping compound.

What accuracy requirements are you after? 1/2 MOA rifle is pretty easily had with no truing and a good barrel hung.

You want all doubt removed from your mind, get it trued (single pointed) by any of the great smiths out there. After truing, if you get into fluting, side bolt release, tact knob, longer handle and etc...you will now have been much better off going custom right off the bat, especially from a financial and resale standpoint.

Put a real nice barrel on that Remington 700 action and it will probably be a dang fine shooter. Back when I was throwing hot lead at PD's it wasn't the rifle, it was all that other stuff that goes haywire, wind, mirage, distance, etc

Facing the action, installing a ground recoil lug while precision chambering a decent blank, and lapping in the bolt lugs carefully is almost certain to give you a 1/2 Minute gun with good loads. Maybe even a little less.

But 1/2 of a Minute of angle at 500 yards is not good enough to hit a pdog reliably.

Ya gotta set yourself up with SOME margin for error, or you're setting yourself up to struggle.

If it were me, I'd be trying for the 1/4 Minute line or better for that target at that range.

Fully true the action.
