Blue Wonder???

Maybe a simplistic/dumb question...please forgive me if so...

A friend of mine swears by this stuff, I am always reluctant to try anything different...I am still very new/getting my feet wet with the precision aspects of shooting and I would liek to get into a good groove of proper cleaning with quality solvents.

I do not have a borescope, and yes, one is being saved for. My barrels are all factory at the moment.

Advice, comments, detractions are all welcome.

Thanks,
Craig

I assume you're talking about their bore cleaner gel. I know of no one who uses it, so I watched their video. They do not address anything about carbon. As for the video presentation, and if I were seeking "the precision aspects of shooting", I would not take credence to anyone who cleans a bore with paper towels, holds a cleaning rod by the shaft and not the rotating handle, uses an obviously too small for caliber bore brush, and uses a cleaning rod like he's playing a fiddle like Charlie Daniels.
At least, they are cleaning from the breach, unlike a previous Tipton video that showed cleaning a bolt gun from the muzzle.

Acouple years ago I bought slip 2000 carbon killer and soaked a barrel overnight with it.Nothing happened and I threw it away. There are snake oil salesman in this sport, actually outside this sport who figure they can market other cleaners for different applications and they don't work. If you want something that works try butches bore shine(made by a competitor in the shooting sports) or any of the Montana extreme products as well as others, stay away of cleaners that have to good to be true uses.

Thank you gentlemen. I have not watched their video, and now I'm not sure I want to since the fellow is using paper towels and not holding the handle of the rod...yikes.

I will certainly go a different route, glad I have not gone ahead with this.

Thanks for the recommendation on Butch's bore shine. I will do a search for other tried and true solvents that likely have been written about ad nauseum on the board.

Thanks again

Thought the heading might be for Blue Wonder cold bluing, not the bore cleaner. I used their cold bluing on a surface rusted H&R .223 barrel and following instructions, it came out looking good.

With competition barrels, I always start with 2 patches of Butch's, followed by 2 patches, then brushing with Montana Extreme. If carbon remains, nothing beats JB on a tight nylon brush.

Pro-Shot Copper Solvent IV; I do have a borescope.

Pulpit: Don't let yourself get in the trap of trying dozens of different products. Use some well known products that have been around a long time and have a proven history. If they were flat out worthless, they will not survive over time.

Then, when you get your borescope, do some before and after cleanings, comparing the results with the amount of time and effort spent. If you are not completely satisfied, then try a few other well known products using the borescope to actually see the results up close and personal. The borescope results do not lie, as do many of the sales marketing claims that are sometimes put together by people who have no hands-on experience(s) with firearms. Their job is to sell a product & they can and will make whatever wild claims they can to sell their product.

Often wish I could talk face to face with some of these marketers. I would not hesitate to call them liars, right to their face(s).

The before mentioned Slip 2000 comments by jon are a perfect example. I tried it, thought it was too good to be true, it was and the unused portion of the 16 oz. container was thrown down the drain. One of the biggest scam's I've ever run across !

+1 - fdshuster, I have forty - eleven different kinds sitting on a shelf either drying up or leaking, none were cheap.

With respect to "snake oils" there are two ways I decide on whether or not something is going to cut the mustard so to speak...

The first is an old cylinder head caked in carbon and the second is a chunk of copper , if the product won't loosen up the carbon from the head or strip off a fresh layer of copper from the test piece in a reasonable amount of time it gets filed as garbage.

My experience in both instances is that if it doesn't smell putrid it won't remove copper and if it isn't extremely flammable to the point of being borderline explosive it won't touch carbon.

Thank y'all! I have ordered two boretech products, some jb bore paste, and will order the other recommended items (pro shot) today.

I think these mentioned will suffice, especially until I get a scope...Santa?

Thanks again for all your help, expertise, and generosity in guiding me.

Craig

If you want something that cleans aggressively, I've found that Sweet's 7.62 solvent removes LOTS of stuff that others leave behind.

Where JB and Iosso work mechanically with abrasion, Sweet's works chemically.

Not sure I'd recommend using it all the time, but when copper fouling gets bad, Sweets gets it out in a hurry.

Just don't let it soak too long (I think they recommend 15 minutes maximum).

Montana 50 bmg solvent takes copper out as good or better than sweets.I have been very happy with their products along with butches, and jb,iosso, and Montana copper cream.

I have been cleaning barrels (mostly M14) for about 100 years (T-REX get it?), I also have tried it all but mostly I use GI bore cleaner. The US Government probably spent a million dollars developing this stuff. I have also used the most common commercial products (Shooters Choice, Butches, etc.) and they are ok but I can not tell any difference between them and with the GI stuff. If you think you need a borescope for cleaning you are over thinking the problem. I think Hoppies #9 is still the best for the 22 rimfire. Also there is nothing wrong with occasionally scrubbing a bore with JB and do not worry about abrasion but JB will get it really clean if that is what you want and I doubt that you do. Unless you have an unusual situation you only need to clean moderately and do not over do it. Take care, Clyde.

I have used Blue Wonder for years, not as a bore cleaner, but as a rust and corrosion remover, it is Biodegradable and as a cleaner it does a great job."0000" steel wool and Blue Wonder and it removes rust an corrosion and I would use it on my most expensive guns and scopes.
