Blasting media ?

For a new dull finish on SS what is the best grit and type ? I was looking at 320 aluminum oxide but I'm not sure if it is the right thing. I've always had someone blast things for me and I have rubbed it down with SS fine wool afterwards to get the desired effects. I've always gotten a little rougher finish than I wanted so I think they have used a rougher grit. I would like to get a smooth finish but dull.

I use glass beads. They peen the metal where the alum ox tends to cut. I think I use the #8 size I can check if you are interested

I agree. Glass beads leave a smooth but dull finish. Alum-oxide and silica sand leave very sharply defined craters-- which actually work well for parkerized finishes.

It's been a long time since I purchased my glass bead media, and I don't recall it being labeled as a specific grit. jd

Baking soda is another option and one that I use often. Not your arm and hammer variety but the kind that is used for blasting turbine blades. Nice dull finish and little to no roughness.

I use the 60/80 for satin finishes. I use aluminum oxide before coatings. It leaves the metal very dark and prone to scratches that show up easily like on stainless barrels for hunting
