Blackhorn 209 Black Powder High Price

Just got an email that Blackhorn 209 powder is available. There was a picture of an 8 oz container priced at $89. That's $11.12 an ounce.

Dug out a container of Blackhorn 209 from my powder rack. It was 10 oz in size. I paid $25 for that. Do not remember just when but this powder has not been out since maybe the late 90's.

By my calculation that is a 445% price increase. I realize power across the line has recently gone up 100% in price or more. That much more?

I got that email as well. For a 150 grain charge that comes out to $3.77 a shot just in powder. I'm sure them inline shooters have fancy bullets that take the total somewhere in the $5 a shot range. I thought muzzleloading was supposed to be fun?

I'm at about forty-eight cents per shot for old school smoky fun.

This shouldn't surprise anyone, Hodgdon bought out Western powder. And left 6 employees working at Miles Mt. That was back in 2020(?). Probably closed down by now. I doubt 6 employees were still making any powder.

I also thought shooting a muzzeloader is both fun and relatively expensive. Sure thought wrong.

Do know you can use black powder, if you can get it. It is not reasonable to use in an in-line but I do have and have killed deer with my flintlock. IMG_1010.jpeg
Today I just seem to find the Georgia week to be more fun and challenging with my in-line muzzleloader. 777 plain sucks there as it fouls horribly, limiting an outing without cleaning to maybe two to max 3 shots.

Blackhorn 209 allows me to shoot more than a dozen shots with no impact change or cleaning. I even tried once and got 20-22 shots ( don't remember which) without cleaning. Gave up tired from reloading.

Not today. With the price of Blackhorn 209 today it is just not going to be fun anymore. I had a title with the price if you could get an 8 lb can, which you cannot. Moderator changed that title. Anyhow, at anywhere near these prices, even with a volume discount, it would cost far more than a thousand dollars.

Like benchrest tournaments where it costs $200-$300 for the entry fee, the same or more just for the ammo, add on travel, motel and extra things you need money for, you get to the price of a few lbs of Blackhorn 209.

No Powder has ever been made at Western Powder in Miles City... Been there a few times. They, like Hogdon just repackage other folks products..

LT30 smokeless powder reached +- $460 for 8 lbs recently and it has lowered by close to $100 now. Let the darn stuff sit on their shelves you do have BP alternatives to BH 209.

My wife has shot 4 deer with an older in-line Thompson Center and Triple 7. Great accuracy and not a one took more than one shot. And one pound for $38 at PV. Reasonable distances from 30 yds to perhaps 100.

I'm surprise that BH209 has reached $89 for 8 oz. The packaging was originally packaged as 10 oz. up until a couple years ago. I bought some year before last and was not impressed with it.

I didn't get an inline till 2020. Thankfully when I find something that works, I stock up. Unfortunately, it was late into the season when I found a store with it in stock. I have enough for my uses for a while but I don't have near the supply I'd like.

Super clean and consistent. My inline hunting is typically out of state so the cleanliness is a huge selling point to me. The one trip I shot a coyote and had a few days to hunt. A couple patches and it was clean and no worries.

I still use 777 and a damp patch of 50/50 ballistol/water followed by a dry patch will keep you shooting all day w/ the same level of fouling…unless that vent hole plugs up on ya.
You wash the barrel out after every shot?

My take is that might work but is impractical while hunting. Last year I had to reload after hitting a buck too high above the shoulder. Needed a fast reload in the stand. 777 use makes an easy reload a study in body strength.

It's always been more expensive than other powders but this is just crazy. Makes me wonder if there is a legitimate reason that it costs more. Is it just pricing at what the market may bring or is there something truly unique to it?
