Black Hills question

I would like to duplicate the load that Black Hills Ammo uses in their 223 Rem with the 60 V-Max bullet. I pulled a bullet, at the powder appears to be a ball powder, I believe the charge weighed a little over 25 grns. The claimed velocity is 3100fps. Just wondering :D

Thanks,

Matt

i dont know why people try to guess what powder is being used in factory ammo--thats just flirting with disaster. i was told by one of my FFL holders that stocks A LOT of blackhills ammo on his shelf that black hills uses Western ball powders--specifically Ramshot Tac. but, take that for what it's worth. give TAC a try. Also, try some BL(C)-2, or H-380.

Take some chronograph readings of the factory ammo, then find a powder/charge combination, with the same bullet that will give you the same, or very close velocities. About as close as you can get, since you/we have no way of duplicating their powder combination.

longshot,
navy shooters have shot black hills 77's XTC for awhile and some lot numbers appear to have been TAC but not sure. The projo is a 77cannelure with sometimes wcc sometimes BHA brass. Tac is where i would start, but FDshuster is right, work the load.. up shots in the dark can be counter productive. IMR 4064, N540, Varget, BL(C)2 are all in my closet as well as TAC. just my $.02
