black coyote?

I have trapped one, seen several others. Also have seen red ones. On the same subject, I saw a black squirrel for the second time while on a bow stand this afternoon.

I've seen a few pics of black ones. One of our buddy's neighbors just shot a red one yesterday and is having it mounted.

We have plenty of "black" gray squirrels around here. I wish I could find me a good batch of fox squirrels. More meat per shot.

I also have a tanned pelt of a red coyote caught by one of my hounds. I have a raccoon that is gray with a snow white tail and another that is same color as an orange house cat. I trapped both of those. The color mutations are out there, just need to put lots of time in the outdoors!

My uncle shot a black coyote last year in the western part of virginia. I also had a buddy several years ago shoot one that was all black. same county, but about 25miles apart on different mountains.

Not to hijack but I would personally shoot every black squirrel that you see IF you like fox squirrels. They are very agressive & will drive out the fox squirrels.

The black squirrel that I have seen twice, was running for his life from a gray squirrel yesterday. The first time I saw him, he was wandering and minding his own business. Size wise, he/she is in the smallish gray squirrel range. This is my first and only black squirrel sighting, so my experience with them is very limited. The particular stand I have seen his from has more squirrels per acre than any woods I hunt. As is normal in my area, grays are the most numerous. I did see several fox squirrels there yesterday also.

Around here the "black" squirrel is just a color phase of the gray. They don't seem to be any more aggressive or passive than any other. They all seem to have turns chasing each other in the FIL's back yard where they can't be hunted.

Have not seen a black coyote, would like to....my brother killed a very very large red one in south Arkansas around 30 years ago, befor phone cameras and at a time when we did not have money to have it mounted.

Size of black squirrels depends on location, Gila National Forrest had some huge ones with pointed ears when I hunted that area in the late 80s

The black squirrels I have seen in Texas seem to be a color mutation of a fox squirrel. Body size was the same as a fox squirrel and the colors ranged from a redish black mix to a shiny black. They were pretty common in Leon county where we use to hunt. That is about half way between Houston and Dallas.

There is a small town called busnells basin outside of rochester new york. For about 2 square miles there are nothing but black squirrels and no grays present.

Usually darker animals in the wild are more aggressive. I wonder if the black coyotes crop up in areas of high competition. I have never seen a black yote or black squirrel but we had a silver and white bobcat that lived on our place for at least 4 years. He was pretty smart. He'd always stay at horizon wherever that may be. 100 yds, 400 yds. One year he just never showed up. Not a lot of people believed us, but we didn't want to shoot him just for proof.

The black coyote that I trapped was taken in farm country with moderate coyote numbers. He was a dominant male. Coyotes can and do cross breed on occasion with domestic dogs. Sometimes the odd colors are results of these matings. At other times they are full blood coyotes, but then again who knows whether there had been an outcross some generations prior. I would think that the higher the population numbers in a given area, the greater the odds for a color mutation to crop up.
