Black bear hunting.

My buddy is in Chocowhinty NC this week deer hunting. He sent me a video yesterday of three bears at his stand. I am not sure if the season is open now but he would not shoot one even if it was.

Never hunted there, but if I'm not mistaken NC has the record book bear.
YES WE DO 880LBS FROM NC SEVERAL YRS BACK 1998 IT STILL HOLDS THE RECORD IF I NOT MISTAKEN THERE HAS BEEN ONE TAKEN THAT WEIGHED OVER 800 LBS FEW YRS BACK I KNOW THERE WAS A HIGH SCHOOL KID THAT KILLED ONE THAT WEIGHED 784 LBS

Western or Eastern NC? There are bears in western NC..
I'm told eastern NC has more bear than most other places in the US. Not sure if that is true, but was told..

Thank you. Good eye spotting the hammer. This was actually the first comment I expected people to make. The blackie that this guy chased off was circling us the whole time we were dealing with him. Went back to buds ATV and the seat was already half missing. Had to chase it away 3x while skinning this one and this was the only rifle between the two of us. You can't really see the depth of the safety pin in the picture but if you look close you can see the shadow on the bottom side and it is on. These marlins have a cross bolt safety for a reason IMO.

My coworker & i were exploring some new to us teritory in PA, when we came accross these. Bear markers.
In one clearing there were 10-12 trees like this.
In the one picture my coworker is 6ft tall and claw mark goes higher than his hand.

We get some truly big bears in PA too.
Several over 800lb have been gotten.
Numerous 600lb every year.

The area we were in i had a close encounter with a 400ish lb in July.
Lots of huffing, drooling, jaw clicking.
The bear was upset too.
Distance about 25 yards, and we surprised each other.

With all the huffing drooling and Jaw clicking you must’ve felt threatened were you bluffing or did you actually attack the bear LOL

:D
Well just say a wardrobe change was necessary....
I went through a small opening through some pines into a clearing about 25 yards in diameter. He was on the other side of the clearing. I came in crosswind, so he never smelled me. Till after at least..

The 9mm was out of the holster before i knew it.
He stood up for a few seconds. Felt like 2 hours.
When he came back to all fours, he took a step towards me.
I put a round in the ground infront of him.
He stopped and stood there swaying back & forth, huffing, drooling , jaw clicking the whole time.
I slowly backed through the opening i came through.
Started carrying a rifle instead of a pistol while scouting & setting game cameras.

Eastern NC has very big bears. A hunt with a guide is expensive. The locations can be very, very thick or it can be open field with long shots. I have shot only one still hunting and he weighed an even 500 according to the biologists scales at the checking station. Finding a place to hunt is tough because most places are tied up in a lease.

I'm living in eastern nc bears are becoming more common in my county all the time. Most people hunt Hyde, Jones and Beaufort county large bears

Bears are definitely spreading out. I have a good friend in Wayne county that is getting trail cam pics of a sow and two grown cubs coming in every night. He does not hunt, but it is still great to see them. I wish I had a place to still hunt bears , I am in Pitt co. I shot my one and only bear in Beaufort Co in 2000 and as I mentioned, it weighed 500 on the nose.
