Bix N Andy cleaning schedule

I only shot a BnA TacSport for 6 months but, from my experience, I'd want to clean them no more than every other month, maybe every month.

I live in the northeast => not as dusty as other areas. Maybe in the southwest, at least every month.

And, to confirm, cleaning them means taking the apart - not just dousing with lighter fluid. IIRC, they recommend using 99% alcohol.

Read this thread....

Since I did the recommended polishing, I only clean mine at the start of the season and maybe once more during the season or perhaps before a big match. BulletCentral has a very good video on how and what to use to clean. I use whatever brake cleaner is on sale and a can of compressed air. HTH and good luck.

I'm hesitant to take a perfectly functioning trigger apart
I know what you mean.

With the two BnA TacSports I've had, if I didn't clean them fairly regularly, they lost either the crispness of the break or the weight or both.

It's critical that you take a picture right after removing the side plate. I also studied all the position of the small pieces first.
Then, take it apart inside a plastic bag - large enough that your hands and fingers have freedom of movement,

I did first try flushing it with lighter fluid without taking it apart. That made a little difference. But, there was a lot of gunk that came out when it was taken apart.

What kind of "gunk" came out? Was it combustion products? Dust/grit from the outside? Just curious.

Not sure exactly. It colored the alcohol grey and there were a few very small 'pieces'.

At the time, it seemed like dust/grit - but the grey stuff could have been burnt powder.
Thanks. I'm considering buying a couple of these and was curious.

I don't know for sure, but have heard that the B&A triggers are bit more susceptible to dirt and oil infiltration. Most that have them really like them. I may spring for one now that Jewell seems to be TU.

Decided to use a couple Bix and Andy triggers on a couple new builds. Jewel doesn’t seem to be coming back anytime soon, I hope I’m wrong, which is hard to fathom with the following they have. Gonna try the Dakota series, hunting rifle set at 1 pound. Came highly recommended from someone who I know and I trust. It’s hard to keep up with all the models. I don’t intend to clean the triggers unless I get in some bad dust or weather or unless it’s performance changes, if I was shooting competition, which I don’t, I may have a different point of view. Good list!

There’s quite a few models offered.

I estimate this trigger after 1 year had approx 4300 rounds fired on it. As bad as it looked when I opened it up it was still performing without issues. I decided to pull it apart as i got caught in a bit of rain. I’ve been very pleased with this trigger and will buy the tac sport pro -x next because I’d like to have a lighter trigger pull. I don’t know how this one was functional. It came on a rifle I bought second hand. The inside was caked with dried/gummy boretech or similar cleaner. It was probably very close to failure.

Make sure your boreguides are working and that barrels aren’t dripping solvent back into the action when you stand them up in the safe.

I clean them once a year and after a match in a dusty location like Phoenix or Raton or after shooting in the rain.

So much for no oil.

I have been watching this thread and have hesitated to post this, and understand that this will not be something that everyone can do, but the best way of knowing when your trigger is in need of cleaning, be it a bix, jewel, flavio, or other, is by measuring where it captures the cocking piece every time the bolt is closed. With an indicator setup on the back of the cocking piece, close the bolt, set zero on a dial indicator, and work the bolt 5 or 10 times alternating from closing the bolt with the trigger pulled(empty chamber), to closing the bolt and letting the trigger catch the cocking piece. Take note of the measured value every time you let the trigger catch the cocking piece. If you have more that 0.0015" variation in the at cocked placement, you WILL have ignition consistency issues even though the trigger may be "functioning fine". A good clean Bix competition trigger should only have about 0.0005" or less variation here if things are right. If you see more than 0.0015" variation, the trigger needs to be cleaned or there is something that needs attention with the system.

If you do happen to take the trigger out to clean and the rifle utilizes a trigger hanger, please be sure to have some way to ensure the trigger/hanger gets put back in the same place you took it off at. A couple thousandths difference in trigger position fore or aft will have way more impact on ignition consistency than most will realize.

After three years of use. I was afraid to open it up. One of those springs is tiny! Use a large zip lock bag in case that tiny spring tries to escape. Works perfect again.
