biulding gun stocks

J.
There are lots of ways to do this. You might want to consider a laminated stock reinforced with something like graphite fiber. A forum member KatoKoch had a bunch of posts about how to do that and Butch Lambert put up some interesting pictures of a reinforced blank he had in process at the time. Might be a way to make the woods that are available to you do the job.

hey i was just going to clear some stuff up. i want to biuld a stock simply becuase the 1 that is on the gun is not reall good, i can't afford to buy the exact stock i want, and last of all i would just like to try and see if i could do it. so i am not to worried about the look of the wood such as english walnut versus black walnut i mainly want something that is not going to be to expensive for the blank but will give me good strenght and durability. i apologize for not mentioning this sooner but i really wasn't expecting such differences in the hard woods.

I applaud your ambition for wanting to try. But, you need to know I could probably buy 3 McMillian stocks for what I have in just hand tools for stock making. You don't have to have the 'best' to do a good job but even 'good' can be quite expensive. And 'poor' quality is useless. Much of what you'll need isn't in a carpenters tool box or at the local hardware store. Those links I sent to you, Claro Walnut Gunstock Co. and Tiger Hunt maple, probably have some of the cheapest lower grades of suitable stock woods available that I know of. If you checked them out you saw some real nice ones, too.
