Birchwood Casey Tru Oil Stock Pics?

Anyone have pictures of stocks finished with Tru Oil? I plan on refinishing this stock and would like to see a few example before I start with the Tru Oil...

If I had a super nice piece of wood on a XP-100 like that I would Auto clear coat it in a heart beat....
It will stand more perils than Tru oil ever will, and it won't Yellow up after time spent in the sun.......

ditto on what Preacher says.

I have a laminate stock done with tru-oil, an it looks really good. BUT i just did another one with 7 coats of dupont auto clear, following the how-to article on this site except I have 2 less coats). The auto clear looks alot better. It really brings out the wood grain and colors, which would be awesome on your stock.

What auto clear urethane are you using? I was looking at Auto Zone the other day and they have a quart of clear that is already mixed and ready to shoot. Would this suffice? Or should I get 2 part urethane that gets mixed with an activator?

What I did, since I dont have my own sprayer)was to do all the sanding on the stock up to 600grit paper. Then I took it to a friend of a co-worker who owns his own bodyshop. I had him spray 3 coats of Dupont auto clear on it, then I brought it home and wet sanded it. Then I took it back to him and he sprayed 3 more coats on it. I again took it home to wet sand it.
I havent actually done the final wet sand and polish yet cause I'm getting the load ready for an upcoming prarie dog trip and I needed the stock. After that is done I will wet sand one final time, and let him put one more final coat of clear on it. Then a light wet sand and polish and it'll be done.

I worked out a deal with him and he just sprayed it whenever he was clearing a car instead of doing it as a seperate job. He had very little time in it since all he did was spray, and he charged me $50 to do it.

I just have one concern about using auto clear on this stock. The fore end tip is just a tad bit loose and may pose a problem once the stock is totally covered with the clear. I notice a tiny tiny bit of movement when I fold the bi pod up. I'm wondering if there is a dowel holding it? I probably should try to remove it and figure out a way to secure it before clearing over it.

The tip more than likely has a dowel rod in it, and it should be fixed before the clear coating.
I use a 2 part mix from the local NAPA store mixed 4 to 1.......

I found almost a full quart of Mar-Hyde urethane and activator that I used to clear a couple helmets with. Its about 10 years old, but sealed and seems fine. I'll give it a try after I fix the loose tip.

I picked up a quart of Nason clear urethane and activator and got started on my stock. I got the old finish stripped, fixed the fore end tip and made a few modifications to the grip to fit my hand better. I like what I see so far! I'm going to wet sand tomorrow and spray 3 more coats and do the same next day. By the weekend, I should have it buffed and ready to shoot!

Here's mine in an older Fajen laminate thumbhole with a dozen or so coats of Tru Oil.
I agree with the auto clear on your piece of wood.

Trued action was hard chromed by Metaloy. When I ordered the stock from Fajen it cost me $25.00 extra to have them just stop the duplicating at the trigger guard so I could have the wide forend. The gun is actually a switch barrel, this one in a 16 inch long .262 necked 6BR, and another one in an 18 inch Broughton, chambered in a tight necked 6.5-284 with a Harrells brake. We were supposed to have a 1000 yd. pistol class at Iowa that fizzeled, but the first time out with the 6.5, I shot a 9 1/2' group at a 1000. Musta scared 'em off.

Well...I got the stock all finished. I did not wet sand and buff the last coat. It turned out so nice and flawless that I'd be doing a lot of extra work for no gain in appearance. If anything, I'd risk messing it up more than anything, lol. I don't want to shoot it now...afraid I might scratch it or something, LOL. I'm going to do my Shehane Tracker next!

I'll bet your really happy you didn't use Tru-oil now...
Super nice job, on a VERY nice hunk of Walnut.....

Yeah, I'm glad I choose the auto clear. I was planning on doing my Shehane Tracker with urethane anyhow...so this gave me a bit of practice shooting a stock. Worked out great! I think the key is to wet sanding after each set of coats and keeping stuff clean.
