Big revolvers!!

I know this is a rifle thread, but curious if anyone has a S&W 460 XVR? Are they accurate with a scope to hunt with?

Im wanting one pretty bad, just have to convince the wife I "need" one!!!

I have a 460es. The x-frame is quite the machine and the 460 is the best of the big boomers- itll shoot the 45, 454 and 460 and the big hunting pistols will get a deer at 200yds easily

If I wanted to shoot distance with a handgun (100+), I’d likely use an XP type handgun. For an all-around hunting revolver I use a FA 475 Linebaugh. If doing over I’d likely make the same choice.

The 460 would be my choice in the X-frame though. It’s certainly a capable caliber just too big/heavy for my taste.

I have had 4 freedom arms. Hate scopes on revolvers but I would bet with load development and a good shooter sub 2" at 100 are entirely possible.

In my prime of shooting them I could crush pop cans at 100 very regular with my 475L and open sights. Now days the recoil gets to me and I would be more inclined to go with a 41 or even a potent loading for the .357 to avoid the recoil. I shot all cast WFN and LFN type bullets.

I’ve never even heard of such a thing.
Geez wizz
I need to get out more......

I have shot a couple of the. BFR’s. A handful is an understatement with some loads. To much of a good thing.
I have moved past the big thumpers, all I have is my .480 Blackhawk.
The 357 in an FA is not your grandpas 357. Mr Tarffin has a good write up on them.
Don’t short change the FA against an XP on deer size critters to 200.
Some years back, different classes,in IHMSA, iron sighted the wheel guns out did the iron sighted XP’s.
When you clean a string of steel chickens@200 with a wheelgun, it don’t get much better than that.

Agree on the 357 in a FA platform loaded to cylinder length, if possible, at and slightly above max book pressures will turn the little 357 into a very capable chambering.

The 41 magnum can play the same game and become a real contender.

Loading the bullets out in the case to fill a cylinder as much as is reasonable is going to be key.

I had a 460 smith and wesson performance center, big sob, nice as hell! But the recoil was a BIT**. It hurt to shoot. It was the long barrel model without a brake on it. I DO NOT RECCOMMEND ONE WITHOUT A MUZZLE BRAKE. Im a bigger dude, and I just didnt want anything to do with it. Traded it for cash and a ruger ball and cap army replica revolver!

I would go 44mag. And I will get a 44mag revolver when funds allow. Anything bigger kills your wrist and hands. Id rather enjoy shooting it.

A rear grip XP would be a good choice too. Center grip is too hard to hold steady, and feels weird under recoil.

Get yourself a .41 mag (S&W) and forget about it. You will enjoy it more than any other AND shoot it a lot. It is amazing to me the difference in recoil between the >41 and .44. The .41 shooting 200 grn (and they are a true .410 caliber) compared to a .44 (actually a .429) is giant. I have had a truckload of .44s over the years and right now own one .44 and 4 .41s. I don't need a more powerful gun to tell me that .44 is my max. My buddy and I used to shoot 500 rnds in a weekend of .44s but they were reduced loads of around 7.5 grns of Unique under 240 grn lead bullet.
I just hadn't discovered the .41 yet. The killing power is there but shoots more like a .357. Do not get yourself to the point where you are only shooting the bigger calibers for macho reasons, it will not pay off!

If I really wanted to go long range w/a pistol it would be w/a bolt action or S/S in some kind of rifle caliber. That is still very tough, I have a safe full of contenders to prove it. Stay with a .41mag in revolver, and check yourself with .44 before jumping onto this new shit. it is really only to sell guns. They are a really well built machine but they never get shot a lot as the recoil is crazy, don't bite

I will agree whole heartedly with the 41 mag thoughts. I drank the koolaid that was shoved at me for years. I always figured it was cheaper to learn from others experience. 17’s foul and have to be cleaned every half dozen shots, cast bullets are only good for practice, lead bores and are worthless, the 41 magnum is an oddball and hard to find ammo for.

I have proved all of that to be total garbage.
I won’t say how many 17’s I now own.
I feel naked if I don’t have at least 2 tons of lead alloy.
I have culled my 5 41 mags down to two.

Another I was guilty of not playing with, 45 Colt.
My 45 Bisley with Ruger only loads will make you take notice when touching one off. I see no need for me to own a 454.

They say you go full circle, and I did. Started with a wheel gun. Progressed through all of the TC,XP,BF and MOA rigs, pretty much all pocket rifles. At one point for about 10-12 years I did not own a rifle other than a few .22 rf.
Swung all the way around and am totally ate up with wheel guns, rifles are at the top of the last for now.

To the OP. If you are really serious about a wheel gun, you owe yourself an FA. I waited way to long to own one, now that one is uh well too many.

Buy your SW and then an FA will come along and redefine accurate.

when the 357 was first developed Doug Wesson took it out west bagged moose and elk from 100-200yds. killed a grizzly with one shot at 135 yds. it had 8 3/8 barrel

when the S&W 50 mag came out my friend who got more money then brains got one. with a scope we were able to shoot 2" groups. the kick wasn't bad but with the brake the blast was wicked and blew a small piece of metal roofing off the roof covering us

Top to Bottom

500 S&W Performance Center 10 5/8" with 2.5-8x EER Leupold
500 S&W "Big Rock" Special 4" BBL
Ruger GP100 4" BBL (wife's carry piece)

Biggest revolver I have is a 8 inch Taurus Raging bull in 44 Mag. However my largest handgun/cannon is a 15 inch ported 375 JDJ on a TC frame. That baby will handle anything walking and has proved it, with JD Jones and a others all around the world.
