Big horn origin action? Reviews?

I have had two TL3's. Sold them both and replaced them with ARC Nucleus actions.

My issue with them was bolt manipulation. I am a bit rough and ham fisted on stuff. I am not smooth enough not to jam the bolt going forward from full open in the stroke to close. (angular misalignment)

With that said they are a very nice action. Adaptable, configurable, well built. I do believe the older TL2 actions were built to a tighter tolerance.

Mine goes to the GS today for barrel fitting. The actions finish is nice, action feels smooth, the cock on open is a little tight but I expect it to wear in. The shroud and firing pin removal is easy and gives great access to clean and to find the lands and case set back. Timney CE fit right in. Bottom metal made for Rem 700 (AICS mags) fits and functions well and the action drops in stocks built for the 700. the stocks will need a bit of relief to the ejection port as the Origin's port is longer at the bottom, on one stock the bolt handle slot will need to be enlarged a touch. Lots to like.

What he said on the ejector port needing the stock relived on the rear to match is spot on.

I think it is the exact opposite, the TL3 was tighter. I had the same tough time running the bolt on my tl3, and at the time had a Mausingfield. The groove cut in the left bolt lug on the tl3 was considerably narrower than the MF, and I feel it got hung up on the mechanical ejector.
I'm sure the nucleus will serve you right, but if you have issues cycling the bolt, look into Impact Precision actions, they have raceway guides on both lugs so even a derelict like myself can run a bolt.
Not bad mouthing bighorn, as the tl3 was an integral part of my most accurate rifle I've ever owned, it was just not for me.

I got into the PRS game running a AIAX. It can be ran harder than any action I have ever owned and my round count on it is significantly higher on it than any other rifle I have ever owned. Hence my trouble with a TL3... I can't slow or smooth out my bolt hand enough to be efficient and accurate 100% of the time. The Nucleus action tolerates this very well. Three lug, anti-bind rails, 72 degree bolt lift, Savage thread, etc , etc... All fit for my purpose.

Side by side a TL2 and TL3 feel completely different. TL2 wins hands down for smooth and tight.

For the money an Origin action is a great deal.

I own four Bighorns, about to pay for number 5. My friends have a couple dozen others. Never a single complaint, never even seen one fail to cycle a round. Not one time, and some of them are BR/Dasher.

It is hard for my to believe anyone could have negative things to say about them.

There are some other good actions out there, Mausingfield/Impact included. I’ve spent some time behind both, but never owned one.

I have 3 Big Horns. 2 TL2s and a real early
Goddard. I love everyone. Other than the ejector spring getting replaced on one of mine with a crapload of rounds and several barrels, No problems. Also have a couple of Kelbys and a Barnard. No experience with the TL3. or the new one.

Went a little crazy lately with the newly released actions. I have both the nucleus and the origin (plus defiance tenacity and kelbly black bear) and the only one I have put in another order for is the origin (although the black bear is amazing me, but also $550 more than origin). Coming from a savage background as well, saw your APR post as well, and the price is definitely worth the upgrade.

Thanks! Most likely ill be parting out my savage and starting a build with the origin. Hopefully i can sell my krg 180 alpha for close to the action price with what i have in it

Reading your APR thread lead to some digging on the TL action. Looks like as someone else mentioned, they have went up quite a bit. I got an email back today from Lyons gunsmithing on pricing and based upon pics of the TL action I think the origin is worth the price over the quoted amount I received for the machining and coating. The downside to the origin, currently, is that it is short action only. The only thing I am considering is the lapua long action from TL, but that is based upon half asleep research in the middle of the night...

Yea id be in it for a short action. Theres to many actions that are close to the TL price that are better. It looks like a good entry level custom but thats when it was at the 550 price last year. The gunwerks grb is 750 id do that over the TL at this point

I was actually tempted to sell my 2 nucleus short actions to buy a couple more origins when I saw that there were some floating around for immediate purchase. But I did matching builds for my son and myself and I had been getting him pumped up since pre-ordering in january, so that was a no go. And I agree, the main reason I was going down the path of looking at the TLs was that I saw them for as low as 499 within the past year'ish so figured at that price it would be worth a shot but not when within reasonably close price to the origin and uncoated.

Yea in a week or two ill start parting my savage out and get the origin most likely. I do like the price of the barreled nucleus action. If you know of anyone looking for a krg alpha 180 chassis let me know. Mines adjustable for length of pull and comb height (no spacers) i know i bought some savage actions from you in the past so if you know anyone shoot em my way please.
